Advanced Air Bag
Air Bag System Construction
With the air bag system which includes front air bags, curtain air bag, front side-air bag, and rear side-air bags for both the driver's and passenger's sides as well as the seat belt pretensioners, the sag of the seat belt is taken up (for seat belt with pretensioner), the driver air bag (inflator) module is deployed from the center of the steering column and the passenger air bag (inflator) module from the top of the instrument panel in front of the front passenger seat in occurrence of a front collision with an impact larger than a certain set value to supplement protection offered by the driver and front passenger seat belts.
Front side-air bag (inflator) module is deployed from the side of the front seat back in occurrence of a sideward collision with an impact larger than a certain set value.
Rear side-air bag (inflator) module is deployed from the quarter lower front trim (hatchback model) or the rear seat side back (sedan model) in occurrence of a sideward collision with an impact larger than a certain set value.
Curtain air bag (inflator) module is deployed from the roof side in occurrence of a sideward collision with an impact larger than a certain set value.
When SDM deploys the air bags at the occurrence of a frontal collision, it determines the extent of the air bag deployment for both the driver seat and front passenger seat according to the extent of the collision impact force and seat position signal (only driver side) provided then.
At the same time, the seat belt pretensioner is activated according to ON or OFF of the seat belt buckle switch.
The occupant classification system installed to the front passenger seat consists of the occupant classification module (OCM) located under the passenger seat, the weight sensor included in the seat, and seat belt buckle sensor.
In the case of the air bag for the front passenger seat, the OCM transmits the conditions of the front passenger based on signals from the weight sensor to SDM.
Thereby, SDM determines non deployment or deployment of the air bag of the front passenger seat.
While there is an occupant in the front passenger seat, if the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator located in the hazard warning switch is lit, its air bag will not operate.
While there is no occupant there, even though the above indicator is not lit, the air bag of the front passenger seat will not operate. But, the operation of side-air bag and curtain air bag is not influenced from the occupant classification system.
WARNING:
If the driver's and front passenger's seats are modified or accessories such as seat covers or cushions are attached to or put on the seats, the air bag system will not work properly, which increases the risk of personal injury.
Do not modify the front seats and avoid adding anything to them such as seat covers or cushions.
The air bag system is designed to activate only in severe frontal and sideward collisions. It is not designed to activate in rear impacts, rollovers, or minor frontal and sideward collisions, since it would offer no protection in those types of accidents.
