Front Drive Shaft Assembly Removal and Installation

Front Drive Shaft Assembly On-Vehicle Inspection:Front
Removal
1) Disconnect wheel speed sensor from steering knuckle.
- ABS model: Front Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
- ESP(R) model: Front Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
2) Remove drive shaft nut. Front Wheel Hub, Steering Knuckle and Wheel Bearing Removal and Installation
3) Drain transaxle oil.
- M/T model: Removal and Replacement
- CVT model: Removal and Replacement
4) For 4WD model, drain transfer oil. Removal and Replacement
5) Remove brake hose mounting bolt (1) and brake hose (2) from bracket and then detach wheel speed sensor harness (3) from strut bracket.
6) Disconnect stabilizer joint from front strut. Front Strut Assembly Removal and Installation
7) Disconnect tie-rod end from steering knuckle.
- Hydraulic P/S model: Removal and Installation
- EPS model: Removal and Installation
8) Disconnect front suspension arm ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Front Wheel Hub, Steering Knuckle and Wheel Bearing Removal and Installation
9) Using tire lever (1) or plastic hammer (3), pull out drive shaft joint (2) so as to release snap ring fitting of joint spline at differential side, at center shaft or at transfer.
10) Remove drive shaft assembly.
11) For 2WD model, remove center bearing support bolts (1) and center shaft assembly (2), if equipped.
Installation
NOTE:
Failure to take proper precautions when installing the drive shaft may result in damage to or breakage of the drive shaft assembly.
- Be careful not to damage the oil seals and boots when installing the drive shaft.
- Insert joints only by hand. Never hit joint boots with a hammer.
- Make sure that the differential-side joint is fully inserted and the snap ring is seated in position.
Reverse removal procedure for installation noting the following.
- Use new cotter pin.
- Use new drive shaft nut.
- For 2WD model, tighten center bearing support bolts as follows.
a Tighten center bearing support bolts in numerical order ("1" - "3") by hand.
b In the same manner as Step a. retighten them to specified torque.
Tightening torque
Center bearing support bolt* (a): 50 Nm (5.1 kgf-m, 37.0 lbf-ft) ((2WD-M/T model))
Center bearing support bolt* (a): 55 Nm (5.6 kgf-m, 40.5 lbf-ft) ((2WD-CVT model))
- Tighten suspension arm ball joint bolts to specified torque. Front Wheel Hub, Steering Knuckle and Wheel Bearing Removal and Installation
- Tighten tie-rod end nuts to specified torque.
- Hydraulic P/S model: Removal and Installation
- EPS model: Removal and Installation
- Tighten stabilizer joint nuts and brake hose mounting bolts to specified torque. Front Strut Assembly Removal and Installation
- Tighten drive shaft nuts to specified torque and caulk drive shaft nut. Locations
- Tighten front wheel speed sensor bolts to specified torque.
- ABS model: Front Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
- ESP(R) model: Front Wheel Speed Sensor Removal and Installation
- Tighten wheel nuts to specified torque. Removal and Replacement
- Fill transaxle with oil.
- M/T model: Removal and Replacement
- CVT model: Removal and Replacement
- For 4WD model, fill transfer with oil. Removal and Replacement
- Check toe setting referring to Front Wheel Alignment Inspection and Adjustment Front Wheel Alignment Inspection and Adjustment
and adjust as required.
