Rear Axle Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model)
NOTE:
Brake fluid is extremely damaging to painted surfaces.
If brake fluid contacts a painted surface, immediately wipe it off and flush the surface thoroughly with water.
Removal
1) Hoist vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2) Remove rear brake drums.
3) Disconnect brake pipes (1) from brake hoses (2) and remove E-rings (3).
4) Remove rear wheel hubs referring to Step 2) to 5) of "Removal" under Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model) Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model).
5) Remove exhaust center pipe.
6) Remove coil springs referring to Service and Repair Rear Coil Spring Removal and Installation.
7) Disconnect wheel speed sensor clamps (1) and parking brake cable clamp nuts (2) from rear axle.
8) While supporting rear axle (1) at both ends remove rear axle bolts and then remove rear axle from chassis by lowering floor jack gradually.
9) Remove brake pipes from rear axle, if necessary.
10) Remove rubber edge covers (2) (if equipped) from rear axle (1), if necessary.
Installation
Rear Axle and Coil Spring Inspection
1) Install rubber edge covers (2) (if equipped) to rear axle (1) as shown in figure, if removed.
2) Install brake pipes to rear axle, if removed.
3) Place rear axle on floor jacks.
Then install rear axle and new rear axle bolts (1) and tighten bolts temporarily.
4) Install coil springs referring to Service and Repair Rear Coil Spring Removal and Installation.
5) Install exhaust center pipe.
6) Install rear wheel hubs referring to Step 2) to 4) of "Installation" under Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model) Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Drum Brake Model).
7) Connect brake flexible hoses (1) to bracket on rear axle with E-rings (2) and tighten brake pipe flare nuts (3) to specified torque.
Tightening torque
Brake pipe flare nut (a): 16 Nm (1.6 kgf-m, 11.5 lbf-ft)
8) Install wheel speed sensor clamps (2) and tighten parking brake cable clamp nuts (1) to specified torque.
Tightening torque
Parking brake cable clamp nut (a): 26 Nm (2.6 kgf-m, 19.0 lbf-ft)
