DTC B1038: Driver Air Bag (2nd Stage) Circuit Shorted to Power Supply

DTC Troubleshooting

1.
Was "Air Bag Diagnostic System Check Flow" performed?
YES -
Go to Step 2.
NO -
Go to Air Bag Diagnostic System Check Flow Air Bag Diagnostic System Check Flow:Advanced Air Bag.

2. Driver air bag 2nd stage circuit check

With ignition switch turned OFF, disconnect contact coil connector "G347" located under the steering column.
Disconnect SDM connector "L04".
Check for proper connection to contact coil connector at terminal "G347-3" and "G347-4".
Check for proper connection to SDM connector at terminal "L04-15" and "L04-16".
If OK, release shorting bar in SDM connector inserting release tool (1) included in special tool (A).
Special Tool

(A): 09932-76010

With ignition switch turned ON, measure voltage between "G347-3" terminal and body ground, and between "G347-4" terminal and body ground.






Is each measured voltage 0 V?
YES -
Go to Step 4.
NO -
Go to Step 3.

3. Floor harness circuit check

Disconnect "L401" connector located near the driver side front pillar lower trim.
Check for proper connection to SDM connector at terminal "L401-1" and "L401-2".
If OK, release shorting bar in SDM connector inserting release tool (1) included in special tool (A).
Special Tool

(A): 09932-76010

With ignition switch turned ON, measure voltage between "L401-1" terminal and body ground, and between "L401-2" terminal and body ground.






Is each measured voltage 0 V?
YES -
Repair "BRN/RED" circuit or "BRN/BLK" circuit for short to power supply circuit at instrument panel harness.
NO -
Repair "BRN/RED" circuit or "BRN/BLK" circuit for short to power supply circuit at floor harness.

4. Contact coil circuit check

Connect contact coil connector "G347" located under the steering column.
Remove driver air bag (inflator) module from steering column referring to Removal and Installation Driver Air Bag (Inflator) Module Removal and Installation:Advanced Air Bag.
Check for proper connection to driver air bag (inflator) module at terminal in connector (black connector) (2).
If OK, release shorting bar in SDM connector inserting release tool (1) included in special tool (A).
Special Tool

(A): 09932-76010

With ignition switch turned ON, measure voltage between each terminals of driver air bag (inflator) module connector (black connector) (2) and body ground.






Is each measured voltage 0 V?
YES -
Substitute a known-good SDM and recheck.
NO -
Replace contact coil assembly referring to Contact Coil Cable Assembly Removal and Installation Contact Coil Cable Assembly Removal and Installation.

NOTE:

Upon completion of inspection and repair work, perform the following items.

- Reconnect all air bag system components and ensure all components are properly mounted.
- Clear DTCs referring to DTC Clearance DTC Clearance:Advanced Air Bag
, if any.

- Repeat Air Bag Diagnostic System Check Air Bag Diagnostic System Check:Advanced Air Bag
to confirm that the trouble has been corrected.
