Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect throttle cable from bracket and throttle lever.
3. Remove upper starter mounting bolt or nut.
4. Raise and support vehicle and drain transmission.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors to back-up lamp and neutral start switches and overdrive solenoid. Connectors are located near starter.
6. Remove lower starter mounting bolt and secure starter alongside engine.
7. Remove driveshaft assembly.
8. Disconnect cooler lines, manual linkage and speedometer cable from transmission.
9. Remove exhaust pipe brace and transmission filler tube.
10. Support weight of transmission with a suitable jack and remove rear mount and bracket.
11. Remove cover from under engine.
12. Position wooden block between engine oil pan and crossmember, then lower jack supporting transmission until engine rests on block.
13. Pry out access hole cover from rear engine plate and remove 6 bolts securing torque converter to drive plate.
14. Fabricate guide pin by cutting head from spare torque converter bolt and install pin in 1 converter bolt hole.
15. Remove both side stiffener braces and all transmission mounting bolts. Ensure transmission is properly supported on jack.
16. Pry against converter guide pin to separate transmission from engine and remove transmission.
17. Reverse procedure to install.
