W/W42, W45, W46, W52, W55 & W56 Transmissions
On except four wheel drive models, proceed as follows:
1. Remove shift lever boot retainer and boot.
2. Remove shift lever using tool SST09305-20012 or equivalent.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper radiator hose.
5. Remove clutch release cylinder hose bracket.
6. Remove accelerator torque rod.
7. Remove starter, then the clutch slave cylinder.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable and back-up switch electrical connector.
9. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then remove exhaust pipe bracket and heat insulator, if equipped.
10. Release parking brake, then disconnect parking brake cable from intermediate lever.
11. Mark driveshaft and pinion flanges for reassembly, then remove driveshaft.
12. Support transmission using suitable jack, then remove rear crossmember.
13. Lower jack and remove clutch housing to engine block attaching bolts. To prevent oil pan from striking suspension member or EGR valve from striking dash panel, position wooden block and suitable jack under oil pan for support.
14. Pull transmission rearward and lower from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install.
On four wheel drive models, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Using tool SST093050012 or equivalent, remove gear shift lever.
3. Using suitable long nosed pliers, remove transfer case lever retaining clip, then remove shift lever.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. If transmission or transfer case is to be disassembled, drain lubricant into suitable container.
6. Scribe alignment marks, then remove front and rear driveshafts.
7. Remove clutch release cylinder, then remove starter and position both aside.
8. Disconnect back-up light switch wiring and four wheel drive indicator switch wiring.
9. Disconnect speedometer cable.
10. Disconnect exhaust pipe clamp from transmission housing.
11. Remove bolts securing rear engine mount to crossmember.
12. Support transmission using suitable jack, then remove crossmember from frame rails.
13. Lower transmission slightly.
14. Position a suitable support and wooden block under engine, then remove bolts securing transmission to engine block.
15. Remove jack supporting transmission, then pull transmission and transfer case down and rearward to remove.
16. If necessary, remove transfer case from transmission by removing mounting bolts, then pulling transfer case away from transmission.
17. Reverse procedure to install.
