Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove engine under cover.
2. Scribe reference marks in engine hood hinge area, then remove hood.
3. Drain engine oil into suitable container.
4. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block into suitable container.
5. On models equipped with auto. trans., drain transmission fluid into suitable container.
6. On all models, remove air cleaner hose and air cleaner.
7. On models equipped with auto. trans., disconnect transmission cooler lines from radiator.
8. On all models, disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine.
9. On turbo models, disconnect turbo coolant hose.
10. On all models, disconnect coolant reservoir hose.
11. On models equipped with A/C, remove No. 2 fan shroud.
12. On all models, remove radiator and fan shroud as an assembly, then the fan and fan clutch.
13. Disconnect heater hoses, then the accelerator cable and throttle valve cable (if equipped).
14. Identify, then disconnect any cables, hoses or electrical connections that would interfere with engine removal.
15. On models equipped with EFI, remove intake plenum and throttle body as an assembly.
16. On all models, remove power steering pump (if equipped) from engine block without disconnecting pressure and return lines and position aside.
17. Disconnect ground strap from power steering bracket.
18. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor without disconnecting high and low side hoses and position aside.
19. On two wheel drive models, remove transmission. On four wheel drive models, remove transmission and transfer case.
20. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
21. Remove left and right side engine mounts.
22. Slowly and carefully lift engine from vehicle. Ensure all cables, hoses and electrical connectors are disconnected during removal.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
