1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then disconnect air intake connector.
2. Disconnect throttle cable, then the transmission electrical connectors.
3. Remove starter upper mount bolt.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission fluid.
5. Mark position of driveshafts, then remove front and rear of driveshafts from transfer.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe from tail pipe.
7. Remove clamps, then the oil cooler pipes from transmission case.
8. Disconnect manual shift linkage from neutral safety switch.
9. Disconnect transfer shift linkage, then the speedometer cable from transmission.
10. On turbocharged models, remove oil cooler clamp from transfer chain case, then disconnect two oil cooler pipes from transfer chain case.
11. On all models, place a suitable jack under transmission, then support weight of transmission on jack.
12. Remove rear support member, then the engine under cover.
13. Remove six torque converter attaching bolts, rotating crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
14. Install a suitable guide pin in one of the torque converter attaching bolt holes.
15. Remove starter, then the transmission housing attaching bolts.
16. Pry on end of guide pin to push torque converter and transmission rearward.
17. Move transmission assembly rearward downward from vehicle.
18. Remove torque converter housing, converter from transmission, then the filler tube.
19. Remove rear support member from transfer case.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
