2WD
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect throttle cable from bracket, guide clips and throttle lever.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors to back-up lamp and neutral start switches and overdrive solenoid, Fig. 12.
4. Raise and support vehicle and drain transmission.
5. Remove driveshaft assembly.
6. Remove exhaust pipe support brace.
7. Remove oil cooler line clamps and disconnect oil cooler lines, shift cable and speedometer cable from transmission.
8. Remove starter mounting bolts and secure starter alongside engine.
9. Support weight of transmission with suitable jack.
10. Support fuel tank, then remove 2 fuel tank mounting bolts and transmission mount through bolt.
11. Remove stiffener braces from transmission housing.
12. Pry out access hole cover from rear engine plate and remove 6 bolts securing torque converter to drive plate.
13. Fabricate guide pin by cutting head from spare torque converter bolt and install pin in 1 converter bolt hole.
14. Remove transmission mounting bolts.
15. Pry against converter guide pin to separate transmission from engine and remove transmission.
16. Reverse procedure to install.
4WD
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect throttle cable housing from bracket, then the cable from throttle linkage.
3. Disconnect three electrical connectors located near starter, Fig. 12.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Drain transaxle and transfer case fluid into a suitable container.
6. Disconnect ATF thermo sensor electrical connector, then remove both front and rear propeller shafts.
7. Remove exhaust pipe clamp from transaxle housing, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
8. Disconnect transaxle shift cable from outer lever.
9. Disconnect vacuum lines from vacuum actuator.
10. Disconnect speed sensor and 4WD indicator electrical connectors from transaxle case.
11. Disconnect speedometer cable, ground strap and transfer indicator switch electrical connector from transaxle case.
12. Disconnect and plug two oil cooler lines from transaxle case.
13. Remove control cable bracket from transaxle case.
14. Unfasten starter motor and position aside.
15. Support transaxle assembly with a suitable jack, then remove transaxle through bolt.
16. Remove both stiffener plates from transaxle housing.
17. Pry out service hole cover from rear of engine, then remove torque converter attaching bolts. Rotate crankshaft as necessary to gain access to all six bolts.
18. Remove transaxle housing attaching bolts, then carefully lower transaxle assembly from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
