Engine: Service and Repair

1. Remove battery, hood and engine undercover.
2. Drain engine oil and coolant into suitable container.
3. Remove air cleaner hose, air cleaner and radiator.
4. Remove P/S pump drive belt, alternator belt, fluid coupling and fan pulley.
5. Disconnect the following connectors:
a. Ground strap from left fender apron.
b. Alternator connector and wires.
c. Coil wire, coil connectors and igniter connectors.
d. Ground strap from engine rear side.
e. ECU connectors and check connector.
f. Starter relay connector and A/C compressor connector.
6. Disconnect following hoses:
a. Brake booster hose.
b. Cruise control vacuum.
c. Charcoal canister hoses.
d. Air hoses from gas filter and air pipe.
7. Disconnect heater hoses, then the accelerator cable, throttle cable and cruise cables.
8. Identify, then disconnect any cables, hoses or electrical connections that would interfere with engine removal.
9. Remove power steering pump (if equipped) from engine block without disconnecting pressure and return lines and position aside.
10. Disconnect ground strap from power steering bracket.
11. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor without disconnecting high and low side hoses and position aside.
12. On all models, disconnect ground straps from engine rear and righthand side.
13. On manual transmissions, remove shift linkage from inside of vehicle.
14. On all models, remove rear propeller shaft.
15. On 2WD with auto. transmission, disconnect shift linkage from neutral start switch.
16. On 4WD with auto. transmission, disconnect No. 1 and 2 transfer shift linkage from cross shaft. Remove cross shaft from body.
17. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable.
18. Remove transfer case undercover, if equipped. Then remove stabilizer bar and front propeller shaft, if equipped.
19. Disconnect oxygen sensor and exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Then remove exhaust pipe clamp from clutch housing and exhaust pipe from catalytic converter.
20. On models with manual transmission, remove clutch release cylinder and bracket.
21. On 4WD models, remove No. 1 front floor heat insulator and brake tube heat insulator.
22. On 2WD models, remove engine rear mounting and bracket.
23. On 4WD models, remove No. 2 crossmember from side frame.
24. On all models, attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
25. Remove left and right side engine mounts.
26. Slowly and carefully lift engine with transmission from vehicle. Ensure all cables, hoses and electrical connectors are disconnected during removal.
27. Separate transmission from engine.
28. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS/TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS.
