Engine: Service and Repair
1. Drain coolant and oil from engine.2. Remove hood, then disconnect battery cables and remove battery.
3. Disconnect accelerator and throttle cables.
4. Remove air intake hose, then disconnect air flow meter electrical connector and remove air flow meter.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove radiator as follows:
a. Discharge A/C system, then remove front turn signal lamp assembly, radiator grille and headlamp doors.
b. Disconnect A/C hoses from condenser, then remove condenser.
c. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose and radiator hoses.
d. Disconnect transmission cooler lines.
e. Remove fan shroud mounting bolts, then radiator attaching bolts and radiator.
7. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors.
8. Disconnect the following hoses:
a. Heater and fuel hoses.
b. Transfer case and brake booster hose.
c. Power steering air control valve hose.
d. Distributor hose and emission control hoses.
9. Remove glove box, then disconnect EFI electrical connectors from ECU.
10. Pull EFI wire harness from cowl panel.
11. Remove power steering pump and position aside. Do not disconnect hoses from pump.
12. Remove A/C compressor and position aside. Do not disconnect hoses from compressor.
13. Raise and support vehicle.
14. Remove transfer case undercover, then the front and rear propeller shafts.
15. Disconnect speedometer cable, then the ground strap from the body.
16. Disconnect two vacuum hoses from transfer case.
17. Disconnect transfer case shift linkage.
18. Disconnect transmission control rod.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
20. Support transmission with a suitable jack.
21. Remove frame crossmember.
22. Remove engine mount bolts, then the engine and transmission as an assembly.
23. Place engine and transmission assembly on suitable workstand.
24. Remove transmission cooler lines, then the transmission from the engine.
25. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque frame crossmember bolts to 29 ft. lbs. and nuts to 43 ft. lbs.
b. Torque exhaust pipe to manifold nuts to specifications.
c. Torque front and rear propeller shaft attaching nuts to 65 ft. lbs.
