Vehicle Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. Jack up the rear wheels to clear ground and block the front wheels. Fig. 37
2. Release the parking brake and set the shift lever into the neutral position.
3. Unplug the wiring connector from the EFI ECU, (located behind the glove box).
4. Place the positive (+) probe of an ohmmeter on the wiring connector terminal, Fig. 38, in series with a 10 Ohm resistor and the negative (-) probe on ground.
5. Turn the rear wheel and check that the ohmmeter oscillates consistently.

CAUTION: The ohmmeter probe should be inserted from the rear side of the connector only.

6. If the ohmmeter needle does not deflect, check that the speed sensor terminals at the back side of the speedometer are properly connected. If the connection is good, replace the speedometer assembly.
7. Reconnect the wiring connector to the ECU.
