Engine: Service and Repair









ENGINE REMOVAL
1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVERS
2. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT FROM RADIATOR AND CYLINDER BLOCK
3. DRAIN ENGINE OIL
4. 4WD: REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT
5. REMOVE (REAR) PROPELLER SHAFT
6. REMOVE AIR DUCT
7. DISCONNECT EQUIPMENT DRIVE SHAFT FROM CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
8. DISCONNECT GROUND STRAP FROM LH FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING
9. DISCONNECT STARTER WIRE
10. DISCONNECT HOSES





Disconnect these hoses:
^ No.4 radiator hose from water inlet
^ No.1 radiator hose from water outlet
^ Heater hose from water pump
^ Oil auto feeder hose from No.1 oil return pipe
^ 2 vacuum hoses for EGR from vacuum transmitting pipe on No.2 air inlet duct
^ Air hose and vacuum hose for distributor ventilation from water bypass pipe under intake manifold
^ Fuel vapor feed hose from No.2 air inlet duct
^ Water bypass hose for EGR from ventilation tube
^ No.2 ventilation hose from ventilation tube
^ Water bypass hose for engine coolant reservoir from water bypass pipe under front floor panel





11. DISCONNECT A/T SHIFT CABLE
(a) Remove the nut and disconnect the A/T shift cable from the control shaft lever.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the A/T shift cable.

12. REMOVE INTAKE PIPE HOSE
13. DISCONNECT NO.2 THROTTLE CABLE FROM NO.2 AIR INLET DUCT
14. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE FROM ENGINE LEFT SIDE
(a) Disconnect these connectors:
^ Igniter connector
^ 2 ECM connectors
^ 4 connectors from cowl wire on front floor panel

(b) Remove the bolt and disconnect the 3 clamps, and disconnect the engine wire from the front floor panel.
(c) Pull out the engine wire from the front floor panel hole.

15. REMOVE A/T OIL DIPSTICK
16. DISCONNECT FUEL INLET AND RETURN HOSES
(a) Disconnect the return hose.





(b) Using SST, loosen and disconnect the inlet hose.
SST 09631-22020

HINT:
^ Put a suitable container or shop towel under the inlet hose.
^ Slowly loosen the union nut.





17. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
(a) Disconnect the 2 oxygen sensor connectors and clamp.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts. 3 nuts and bracket.
(c) Disconnect the 3 0-rings.
(d) Remove the front exhaust pipe and 3 gaskets.





18. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE HEAT INSULATOR
- Remove the 3 bolts and heat insulator. and disconnect the ground strap for the transmission.
19. DISCONNECT 2 A/T OIL COOLER HOSES





20. REMOVE IGNITION COIL
(a) Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
(b) Disconnect the high-tension cord from the distributor.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts and ignition coil, and disconnect the ground strap for the engine.
21. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE FROM ENGINE RIGHT REAR SIDE
(a) Disconnect the condenser connector.
(b) Remove the bolt. and disconnect the 4 clamps and engine wire.
22. DISCONNECT A/T AND PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONNECTORS





23. REMOVE ENGINE WITH TRANSMISSION

HINT: Prepare an engine lifter in advance as shown.





(a) Lower the vehicle while supporting the engine and transmission with the engine lifter.





(b) Remove the 2 bolts. 2 nuts and 2 plate washers holding the RH and LH engine mountings to the engine front support member.





(c) Remove the 2 through bolts, 2 plate washers and 2 nuts holding the rear mounting to the No.2 rear engine mounting bracket.
(d) Lower the engine and transmission.

NOTICE: Make Sure the engine is clear of all wiring. hoses and cables.

(e) Slowly raise the vehicle.
