Ignition Timing: Adjustments
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
Tachometer Connector Hook-Up:
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector.
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector.
Connecting Service Wire:
4. Check idle speed.
Idle Speed: 650 rpm
5. Using timing light, verify that the timing mark on the drive plate is aligned with the mark on the bell-housing.
Timing Mark:
Ignition Timing: 7° BTDC at idle
6. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
7. Remove service wire.
8. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing: 12° BTDC at idle
9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
