Ignition Timing: Adjustments
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
Tachometer Hookup:
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the data link connector, (located in the engine compartment), or the negative terminal of the ignition coil.
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Check Connector:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 (or T) and E1 of the data link connector.
4. Check idle speed.
Idle Speed: 750 rpm.
Ignition Timing Mark:
5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley.
Ignition Timing: 5° BTDC at idle.
6. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor housing until marks align.
7. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire from data link connector.
9. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing: 10 - 14° BTDC at idle.
10. Check idle speed and adjust if necessary.
11. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
