Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION

On Vehicle

1. Disconnect the connector from the Volume Air Flow Meter.

Air Flow Meter Connector Terminal Identification:

2. Using an ohmmeter measure the resistance between each terminal as shown:

Between terminals E1 and FC
measuring plate fully closed infinity

Between terminals VC and E2
always 100 - 300 ohms

Between terminals VB and E2
always 200 - 400 ohms

Between terminals VS and E2
measuring plate fully closed 20 - 400 ohms

Between terminals THA and E2
at -20°C (-4°F) 10 - 20 k ohms
at 0°C (32°F) 4 - 7 k ohms
at 20°C (68°F) 2 - 3 k ohms
at 40°C (104°F) 0.9 - 1.3 k ohms
at 60°C (104°F) 0.4 - 0.7 k ohms

3. If not within specifications, replace Volume Air Flow Meter.

Off Vehicle

Air Flow Meter Connector Terminal Identification:

1. Using an ohmmeter measure the resistance between each terminal as shown:

Between terminals E1 and FC
measuring plate fully closed infinity
measuring plate other than closed zero

Between terminals VC and E2
always 100 - 300 ohms

Between terminals VB and E2
always 200 - 400 ohms

Between terminals VS and E2
measuring plate fully closed 20 - 400 ohms
measuring plate fully open 20 - 1000 ohms

Between terminals THA and E2
at -20°C (-4°F) 10 - 20 k ohms
at 0°C (32°F) 4 - 7 k ohms
at 20°C (68°F) 2 - 3 k ohms
at 40°C (104°F) 0.9 - 1.3 k ohms
at 60°C (104°F) 0.4 - 0.7 k ohms

2. If not within specifications, replace Volume Air Flow Meter.

NOTE: Resistance between terminals E2 and VS will change in a wave pattern as the measuring plate slowly opens.
