Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION

1. Turn the ignition switch off.
2. Disconnect the connector at the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor.

3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals of the ECT Sensor. Resistance should read:

at -20°C (-4°F): 10 - 20 k ohms
at 0°C (32°F): 4 - 7 k ohms
at 20°C (68°F): 2 - 3 k ohms
at 40°C (104°F): 0.9 - 1.3 k ohms
at 60°C (140°F): 0.4 - 0.7 k ohms
at 80°C (176°F): 0.2 - 0.4 k ohms

If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
