Engine: Service and Repair

1. Obtain audio anti-theft code, if equipped, as outlined in Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove battery, then the engine under covers.
3. Drain engine coolant and oil, drain transmission oil.
4. Make alignment marks on hood hinges, then remove hood.
5. Remove grill and radiator as follows:
a. Remove two screws holding lefthand and righthand clearance lights, then the lights.
b. Remove four screws and 11 clips holding grill, then the grill.
c. Remove radiator hoses, then the radiator reservoir tank.
d. Remove drive belts, then the cooling fan and fan shroud as a unit.
e. Remove four radiator mounting bolts, then the radiator.
6. Remove MAF sensor, IAT sensor, air hose and upper air cleaner as a unit, then the lower air cleaner housing.
7. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle body, then remove intake air connector tube.
8. On models with A/C, remove compressor without disconnecting hoses or discharging system. Move and secure compressor aside. Remove compressor mount bracket from engine.
9. Disconnect heater hoses, brake booster hose and emission system hoses. Disconnect fuel system pressure and return hoses.
10. On models with power steering, remove power steering pump pulley using flexible Y wrench, tool No. 09960-10010, or equivalent, to hold pulley, Fig. 1. Then, without disconnecting hoses, remove power steering pump and position aside.
11. Disconnect wires from alternator.
12. Remove righthand side door scuff plate and kick panel trim. Remove ECM, then disconnect engine compartment wiring, prepare wiring to be pulled through cowl into engine compartment.
13. In engine compartment disconnect engine harness from igniter. Remove ground strap bolt, disconnect harness support clamps, then pull engine harness through firewall.
14. Remove gear shift knob and boot, then the lever by removing six bolts holding shifter housing to transmission.
15. Remove front anti-sway bar, then the complete driveshaft. Place matchmarks on driveshaft and differential flanges. Install suitable sealing tool into transmission tailshaft housing to prevent leakage.
16. Disconnect speedometer cable and both oxygen sensor connectors, then remove front exhaust pipe.
17. Remove clutch slave cylinder, then disconnect starter wiring.
18. Support transmission using suitable equipment, then remove transmission mount bracket from frame and transmission.
19. Attach suitable equipment to engine, remove righthand and lefthand motor mount bolts, then lift engine and transmission from vehicle.
20. Separate engine from transmission.
21. Reverse procedure to install. Reset audio anti-theft code, if equipped, as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
