Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Air Bag Module & Seat Belt Pretensioner Assembly Disposal

When handling a deployed air bag assembly, a face shield and rubber gloves should be worn. Vehicle interior and HVAC ducts should be vacuumed. If sinus or throat irritation is encountered during air bag removal, exit vehicle and breathe fresh air. If skin irritation is encountered, flush affected area with cool water. If any other type of irritation continues, consult a physician. Wash hands and rinse thoroughly with water after handling a deployed air bag assembly.

All deployed air bag units should be removed as described under Air Bag Module, Service and Repair. After unit has been removed, it should be placed in a heavy duty plastic bag, sealed securely, then placed with automotive scrap. All undeployed air bag units must be deployed prior to disposal.

If vehicle is not being scrapped, the air bag assemblies must be deployed outside the vehicle. When scrapping vehicle, air bag assemblies should be deployed while still installed.
