AIRBAG DEACTIVATION (SUPPLEMENT)
This Technical Service Bulletin provides you with the installation instructions for the Airbag Cut Off Switches, Off Indicator and Wiring Harnesses necessary for the Airbag Deactivation procedure adopted by Transport Canada. These instructions include the installation procedure requirements for the following conditions :
Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side and passenger side)
Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side only)
Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for passenger side only)
NOTE:
Be sure to explain the method of operation of the airbag deactivation system and also provide your customer with a copy of the owner's manual supplement.

NOTE: Airbag Cut Off Switches are ON / OFF Switches.

PREPARATION
CAUTION:
Work must be started more than 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds of disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may be deployed.)
HINT :
For details about removal of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.
1. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVERS
2. REMOVE LOWER LH FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 2 screws and hood lock release lever.
(b) Remove the 4 bolts, screw and lower LH finish panel.
3. w / Rear console box :
REMOVE REAR CONSOLE BOX AND REAR CONSOLE BOX COVER
4. REMOVE FRONT CONSOLE BOX
5. REMOVE LOWER CENTRE COVER
6. REMOVE CENTRE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the heater control knob.
(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the heater control panel.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
(c) Remove the 2 screws and centre cluster finish panel, then disconnect the connector.
7. REMOVE START SWITCH BEZEL
Using a screwdriver, remove the start switch bezel.
HINT :
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
8. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the cluster finish panel.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
9. REMOVE RADIO AND STEREO OPENING COVER
10. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR
Remove the 2 screws and glove compartment door.
11. '98 Model Year :
DISCONNECT AIRBAG CONNECTOR
(a) Remove the No. 1 under cover.
(b) Pull up and disconnect the connector.
NOTICE:
When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
12. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL
13. REMOVE LOWER CENTRE FINISH PANEL
PROCEDURE :
1. CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Set the paper pattern for the cluster finish panel on the cluster finish panel.
b) Drill a hole at the position marked A in the illustration.
Hole diameter : 6 mm
(c) Cut the area marked B indicated in the illustration.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
2. LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL
(a) Set the paper pattern for the lower No. 2 finish panel.
(b) Drill 2 holes at the positions marked C in the illustration.
Hole diameter : 6 mm
(c) Cut the area marked D indicated in the illustration.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
3. Except '98 Model Year' :
AIRBAG CUT- OFF SWITCH
Cut the indicated area in the illustration.
NOTICE :
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
4. GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR
Cut the indicated area in the illustration.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
5. COLUMN LOWER COVER
Attach the urethane sheet on the column lower cover as shown in the illustration.
ASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH
Install the switch to the lower No. 2 finish panel with 2 bolts and 2 nuts.
2. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Paste the sticker "SWITCH IN GLOVE BOX" on the upper surface of the airbag off indicator.
(b) Wrap the wire harness between the end of airbag off indicator and the end of corrugated tube with vinyl sheet.
Vinyl sheet : 50 mm X 50 mm
(c) Install the bolt, nut and airbag off indicator.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION :
When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
NOTICE :
After clamping the wire harness with a band clamp, cut off the excess.
1. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Install the cluster finish panel (w / airbag off indicator) temporarily.
(b) Route the airbag off indicator wire harness to the cut off switch by passing it under the PKB lever, between No. 1 brace and air duct, behind No. 2 brace, then over instrument panel reinforcement, and place it on the glove box area.
2. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT OFF SWITCH
(a) Route the cut off switch wire harness to the driver side airbag by passing it over the instrument panel reinforcement, behind No. 2 brace, between No. 1 brace and the air duct, then under the PKB lever, and place it near the switch connector.
HINT :
Pass through the same route as the airbag off indicator wire harness and under the PKB lever.
(b) Connect the connector of the airbag off indictor and airbag cut off switch.
(c) Install the engine wire harness to the lower No. 2 finish panel.
(d) Secure the wire harness with 3 band clamps, as shown in the illustration.
(e) Install the lower No. 2 finish panel (w / airbag cut off switch) temporarily.
3. FIX WIRE HARNESS OF AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH AND AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Disconnect the driver airbag connector.
(b) Connect one end of the wire harness of cut off switch to the instrument panel wire harness, and connect the other end to the spiral cable.
(c) Secure the wire harness with 3 band clamps as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE :
After fixing the wire harness, tilt the steering column and check if the wire harness is too taut, pinched or dislodged.
(d) w/o Daytime running light :
Secure the wire harness with a band clamp as shown in the illustration.
(e) w/ Daytime running light :
Secure the wire harness with 2 band clamps as shown in the illustration.
(f) Bundle the excess wire harness of the cut-off switch, secure the cut-off switch wire harness and airbag off indicator wire harness with 4 band clamps.
(g) Fix the airbag off indicator wire harness to the sub wire harness with existing clamp and a band clamp.
4. INSTALL SUB WIRE HARNESS
(a) Connect the connectors of the airbag off indicator and sub wire harness.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and No. 1 junction block.
(c) Disconnect the connectors on the back side of No. 1 junction block as shown in the illustration.
(d) Connect the disconnected connectors to the connectors of the sub wire harness. Then connect the other connectors of the sub wire harness to the back side of the No. 1 junction block.
If the connector on the back side of No. 1 junction block shown in the illustration is disconnected, connect the grey colored connector to the portion indicated "GR", since it might be mistakenly connected.
(e) Install the No. 1 junction block with 2 bolts.
5. FIX SUB WIRE HARNESS
(a) Secure the sub wire harness with 2 band clamps as shown in the illustration.
(b) Install the butyl pad as shown in the illustration.
(c) Secure the sub wire harness with a band clamp as shown in the illustration.
6. INSTALL REMAINING PARTS
CHECKING AFTER INSTALLATION
1. CHECK VISIBILITY OF INDICATOR LIGHT
Check if the indicator light is visible from the normal driving position by having the customer seated in the driver's seat.
2. SRS DIAGNOSIS CHECK
About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ACC or ON, check that the SRS warning light in combination meter goes off.
If the SRS warning light flashes, the connector could be disconnected or a wire in the wire harness could be broken or short circuited. If this happens, check the applicable circuit for the DTC reading. (Refer to Repair Manual)
3. CHECK OPERATION OF AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR AND AIRBAG CUT- OFF SWITCH
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON, and check that all the indicator lights (AIRBAG, OFF) light up.
(b) Check that the OFF indicator light goes out after approx. 5 seconds.
NOTICE:
In case that the airbag cut-off switch is at OFF position, the OFF indicator light stays ON.
(c) Check the operation of the off indicator light.
(d) Check the dimming function at night
Under the condition that the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and the airbag off indicator is lit, turn the light control switch to TAIL position and check that the indicator light dims.
