Disassembly and Assembly
Tilt Steering Column (1 Of 2):
Tilt Steering Column (2 Of 2):
DISASSEMBLY
NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. Remove the column upper bracket and the column upper clamp.
2. Remove the three tension springs.
NOTE: Remove the springs with the tilt function at maximum tilt up.
3. Remove the tilt lever by doing the following.
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the spring nut.
b. Remove the lever.
c. Remove the two bushings from the column upper tube.
4. Remove the tilt lever link
5. Remove the column upper tube with the main shaft assembly by performing the following steps.
a. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the two tilt steering bolts.
b. Remove the upper tube with the shaft from the column tube.
6. Remove the tilt lever retainer.
7. Remove the main shaft assembly after doing the following.
a. Using the 09950-40010 (09958-04010) Special Service Tool (SST), compress the compression spring.
NOTE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft more than 20°.
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the shaft.
c. Remove the shaft from the column upper tube.
d. Remove the compression spring and bearing thrust collar from the shaft.
e. Remove the collar from the shaft.
8. Using a pin punch and hammer, tap out the tilt steering No.2 shaft pawl.
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. Coat the assembly with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
2. Install the tilt steering pawl. Using a plastic hammer, tap in a new tilt steering No.2 shaft and install the pawl.
NOTE: Tap the shaft completely into the steering column upper tube.
3. Install the main shaft assembly by performing the following procedures.
a. Using an offset wrench and hammer, drive in a new collar to the shaft.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the collar.
b. Install the bearing thrust collar and compression spring to the shaft.
c. Install the shaft to the column upper tube.
d. Using the 09950-40010 (09958 - 04010) Special Service Tool (SST), compress the compression spring.
NOTE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft more than 20°.
e. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the shaft.
4. Install the tilt lever retainer.
5. Install the column upper tube with the main shaft assembly by performing the following.
a. Install the upper tube with the shaft to the column tube.
b. Using a hexagon wrench, tighten the two tilt steering bolts to 20 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
c. Check that the upper tube turns smoothly.
6. Install the tilt lever link.
7. Install the tilt lever by doing the following.
a. Install the two bushings to the column upper tube, as shown in the illustration.
b. Install the lever, as shown in the illustration.
c. Install a new spring nut to the lever.
9. Install the three tension springs.
NOTE: Install the springs with the tilt function at maximum tilt up.
9. Install the column upper bracket and the column upper clamp.
10. Check the tilt steering operation.
11. Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
