REMOVAL
1. Remove steering wheel pad, as follows:

NOTICE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will be recorded.
^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the two torx screws.





NOTE: Loosen the two screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





d. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad. keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.
^ When removing the wheel pad. take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

2. Remove steering wheel, as follows:
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.





c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
d. Using the Special Service Tool (SST) 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010, 09952 - 05010, 09953 - 05020, 09954 - 05020) or equivalents, remove the wheel.

3. Remove the upper and lower column covers. Remove the seven screws.
4. Remove lower finish panel No. 1, as follows:
a. Remove the two screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever from the panel.
b. Remove the four screws and the front door scuff plate.
c. Remove the clip and cowl side trim.
d. Remove the four panel set bolts.
e. Remove the light control rheostat and lock nut.

5. Remove duct heater to register No. 2. Remove the screw.
6. Remove combination switch with spiral cable, as follows:
a. Remove the two screws.
b. Disconnect the connectors.
c. Disconnect the airbag connector.
d. Remove the four screws.

7. Remove spiral cable.

NOTICE: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.





8. Disconnect intermediate shaft assembly, as follows:
a. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and worm gear valve shaft.
b. Remove the A, B and C bolts.

9. Remove intermediate shaft assembly and sliding w/shaft yolk sub-assembly.
10. Remove steering column assembly. Remove the two steering column assembly set bolts and nuts.

INSTALLATION
1. Install steering column assembly. Torque the two steering column assembly set bolts and nuts.

Torque: 25 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).

2. Install intermediate shaft assembly and sliding w/shaft york sub-assembly. Temporarily install the B and C bolts.





3. Connect intermediate shaft assembly, as follows:
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and worm gear valve body assembly.
b. Torque bolt C.

Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

c. Torque bolt A.

Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

d. Torque bolt B.

Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

4. Install spiral cable.
5. Install combination switch with the spiral cable, as follows:
a. Install the four screws.
b. Connect the airbag connector.
c. Connect the connectors.
d. Install the two screws.

6. Install duct heater to register No. 2. Install the screw.
7. Install lower finish panel No. 1, as follows:
a. Install the lock nuts and light control rheostat.
b. Tighten the four panel set bolts.
c. Install the cowl side trim and clip.
d. Install the front door scuff plate with the four screws.
e. Install the engine hood release lever with the two screws.

8. Install upper and lower column covers. Install the seven screws.
9. Center spiral cable, as follows:
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the spiral counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.





c. Then turn the spiral cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the red mark.

NOTE: The spiral cable turns clockwise about 3 turns to either left or right of the center.

10. Install steering wheel, as follows:
a. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft.
b. Tighten the set nut.

Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

c. Connect the connector.

11. Install steering wheel pad, as follows:

NOTE:
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

a. Connect the airbag connector.





b. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx wrench, tighten the two screws.

Torque: 9.0 Nm (78 inch lbs.).

12. Check steering wheel center point.
