Removal and Installation

Front Axle - 4 WD:





REMOVAL
1. Remove the front wheel.





2. With ABS, disconnect ABS speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
3. Remove the brake caliper, as follows:
a. Remove the two bolts and disconnect the knuckle arm with brake line bracket from the steering knuckle.
b. Remove the two brake caliper set bolts.
c. Support the brake caliper securely.

4. Remove the flange, as follows:
a. Remove the grease cap from the flange.
b. Remove the bolt.
c. Remove the six mounting nuts and washers.





d. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap on the bolts head and remove the six cone washers.
e. Install and tighten the two bolts and remove the flange.
f. Remove the gasket.

5. Remove the axle hub with the disc, as follows:
a. Using a screwdriver, release the lock washer.





b. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09607 - 60020 or equivalent, remove the lock nut.
c. Remove the lock washer and adjusting nut.
d. Remove the claw washer.
e. Remove the hub and disc together with the bearing.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

6. Remove the oil seal and the inner bearing, as follows:
a. Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.
b. Remove the bearing from the hub.



INSTALLATION
1. Pack the bearing with Multipurpose (MP) grease, as follows:
a. Place MP grease in the palm of your hand.





b. Pack grease into the bearing, continuing until the grease oozes out from the other side.
c. Do the same around the bearing circumference.

2. Coat the inside of hub with MP grease.
3. Install the inner bearing and the oil seal, as follows:
a. Place the inner bearing into the hub.





b. Using SST 09950 - 60020 (09951 - 00910), 09950-70010 (09951 -07100) or equivalents, and a hammer, install a new oil seal into the hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

c. Coat the oil seal lip with MP grease.

4. Install the axle hub to the steering knuckle, as follows:
a. Place the axle hub to the steering knuckle.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

b. Install the bearing.
c. Install the claw washer.

5. Adjust the preload, as follows:





a. Using SST 09607 - 60020 or equivalent, torque the adjusting nut.

Torque: 59 Nm (43 ft. lbs.).

b. Snug down the bearing by turning the hub several times.
c. Using SST 09607 - 60020 or equivalent, loosen the nut until it can be turned by hand.
d. Using SST 09607 - 60020 or equivalent, retighten the adjusting nut.

Torque: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

e. Check that the bearing has no play.

6. Install the lock washer and the lock nut, as follows:
a. Install a new lock washer and lock nut.
b. Using SST 09607 - 60020 or equivalent, torquing the lock nut.

Torque: 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





c. Using a spring tension gauge, check the preload.

Preload (starting): 25 - 53 N ( 5.7 - 11.9 lbs.).

NOTE: Make sure to check preload in the direction of rotation. If the preload is not within the specification, adjust it again with the adjusting nut.

d. Secure the lock nut by bending one of the lock washer teeth inward and the other lock washer teeth outward.

7. Install the flange, as follows:
a. Place a new gasket in position on the axle hub.
b. Install the flange to the axle hub.
c. Install the six cone washers, plate washers and nuts.
d. Tighten the six nuts.

Torque: 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).

e. Install the bolt and grease cap, tightening the bolt.

Torque: 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).

8. Install the brake caliper, as follows:
a. Install the brake caliper to the steering knuckle.
b. Tighten the two bolts.

Torque: 123 Nm (90 ft. lbs.).

9. Connect the knuckle arm to the steering knuckle, cleaning the threads of the bolts and steering knuckle with toluene or trichloroethylene.





b. Apply sealant to the bolt threads.

Sealant: Part No. 08833 - 00070, THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent

c. Connect the knuckle arm with brake line bracket to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts.

Torque: 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.).

10. For vehicles with ABS, connect the ABS speed sensor to the steering knuckle, tightening the bolt.

Torque: 8.0 Nm (71 inch lbs.).

11. Install the front wheel.

Torque: 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).

12. For vehicles with ABS, check the ABS speed sensor signal.
