Removal and Installation
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD
NOTICE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ACC or ON, DTCs will be recorded.
a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the 2 steering wheel lower No. 2 covers.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.
HINT: Loosen the screw until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
d. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.
NOTICE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the air bag wire harness.
e. Disconnect the terminal.
2. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL
a. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
b. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
c. Using Special Service Tool (SST), remove the wheel.
SST 09950-50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)
d. Disconnect the connector.
3. REMOVE UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS
Remove the 3 screws, upper and lower column covers.
4. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Disconnect the 4 connectors.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector.
c. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch.
5. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE
NOTICE: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
6. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM AND FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE
7. REMOVE LOWER LEFT-HAND FINISH PANEL
a. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood lock release lever from the panel.
b. Remove the 4 panel set bolts and lower Left-Hand finish panel.
8. REMOVE NO. 2 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT
9. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING
10. REMOVE NO. 2 INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 universal joint assembly and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Remove the "A" bolt.
c. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and control valve shaft.
d. Remove the "B" bolt.
e. Slide the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and remove the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
11. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER NO. 2
Remove the 3 bolts and column hole cover No. 2.
12. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the cable assembly from the column shift lever assembly.
13. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY WITH NO. 2 UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Remove the 4 steering column set nuts.
c. Pull out the steering column assembly with No. 2 universal joint assembly.
14. REMOVE NO. 2 UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Place matchmarks on the steering column assembly and No. 2 universal joint assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and No. 2 universal joint assembly.
15. REMOVE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AND STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADAPTER
INSTALLATION
NOTICE: Never rotate the steering shaft as much as possible, when you connect the inter mediate shaft to the gear box. ECU will detect the failure, if the steering shaft would rotate more than ± 57 degrees from installing steering angle sensor to adjusting the alignment.
1. INSTALL NEW STEERING ANGLE SENSOR
a. Fix the adapter to the steering shaft surely.
NOTICE: At that time, the projection of the adapter should befit to the hole on the steering shaft.
b. Insert the projection of steering angle sensor toward the holder on steering column surely.
HINT: At that time, the three nails on the steering angle sensor would catch the adaptor.
c. Insert the connector of steering angle sensor to the bracket on the lower side of steering column. Then, connect it to the connector of vehicle wire harness surely.
d. Remove the lock pin from the sensor.
2. CONNECT NO. 2 UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the column assembly and No. 2 universal joint assembly.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY WITH NO. 2 UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Install the column assembly with No. 2 universal joint assembly.
b. Install the 4 steering column set nuts.
Torque: 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: At that time, take care not to rotate steering shaft.
c. Connect the connectors.
4. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
Connect the cable assembly to the shift lever assembly.
5. INSTALL COLUMN HOLE COVER NO. 2
Install the column hole cover No. 2 to body with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 ft. lbs.)
6. INSTALL NO. 2 INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 universal joint assembly and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Align the matchmarks on the control valve shaft and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
c. Install the "B" bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
d. Install the "A" bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
7. INSTALL BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING
8. INSTALL NO. 2 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT
9. INSTALL LOWER LEFT-HAND FINISH PANEL
a. Install the lower Left-Hand finish panel with the 4 bolts.
b. Connect the hood lock release lever with the 2 screws.
10. INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM AND FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE
11. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE
12. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE
a. Install the combination switch with the 3 screws.
b. Connect the airbag connector.
c. Connect the 4 connectors.
13. INSTALL UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS
Install the upper and lower column covers with the 3 screws.
14. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
c. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2 turns to align the mark.
HINT: The cable will rotate about 2 turns to either left or right of the center.
15. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
a. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft.
b. Install the wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connector.
16. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
NOTICE:
^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.
a. Connect the terminal.
b. Connect the airbag connector.
c. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screw is caught on the screw case.
d. Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws.
Torque: 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)
e. Install the 2 steering wheel lower No. 2 covers.
17. CHECK STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
