Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
INSPECTION1. WARM UP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
2. CHECK IDLE SPEED
3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO ENGINE
Clamp the tester probe of a timing light to the 4 lead wires or black-red wire of the ignition coil connector for No.1 cylinder.
4. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING
a. Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.
SST 09843-18040
HINT: After engine speed is kept at about 1,000 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.
b. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 3 - 7° BTDC @ idle 5 ± 2° BTC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
c. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
5. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing: 4 - 17° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position)
HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 4° and 17°.
6. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT FROM ENGINE
