Body Structure

Lightweight and Highly Rigid Body

The body of the '03 4Runner has been made lightweight and highly rigid through the refinement of the shape and construction of each part, optimized allocation of reinforcements and members, and use of high strength sheet steel.

1. High Strength Sheet Steel

Light and highly rigid high strength sheet steel is used for the hood, fender, door panels, back door and members.

2. Body Shell

^ The areas that join the pillars to the roof front head rail and roof side rail or the rocker are provided with reinforcements to ensure a strong pillar construction. In addition, reinforcements are efficiently located throughout the body to realize excellent body rigidity.

^ The side panel has been integrated in order to improve its rust resistance and appearance.

3. Doors

^ Pipe type side impact protection beams are in the lower space between the outer and inner door panels.

^ The door panel has been changed from a composite to a frame construction, and the hinge side has been changed from a dual to a single construction for weight reduction.

4. Frame

^ The frame is basically the same ladder type used in the previous model. The shape of the various areas of the frame has been revised in order to realize excellent collision safety performance and to improve riding comfort.

^ The cross section area of the frame side rail has been enlarged in order to realize excellent frame's rigidity and joining rigidity of the suspension system. As a result, the vehicle's riding comfort has been improved.
