Some 2001 -- 2003 model year Highlander vehicles may exhibit a squeak or shudder noise when turning the steering wheel. The steering column hole cover has been changed to correct this condition.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2001 - 2003 model year Highlander vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

NOTE:
The countermeasure vehicles can be identified by the Lot Number on steering intermediate shaft yoke:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Refer to ETAS for applicable model year Highlander Repair Manual.
Section: Steering Column;
Subsection: Steering Column Assembly; Overhaul.
1. Remove the Steering Intermediate Shaft Sub--Assembly.
NOTE:
Prior to removing the Steering Intermediate Shaft Sub-Assembly, apply match marks to the shaft and secure the steering wheel to prevent it from rotating.
2. On the new Steering Column Hole No. 2 Cover, apply molybdenum grease to the cover where it contacts the steering shaft.
3. Re--assemble the vehicle and tighten all fasteners according to repair manual on ETAS.
4. Confirm the repair eliminated the noise concern.
