Introduction

The 2004 model year Camry, Highlander and Solara vehicles are equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) that will enable or disable the passenger front and side airbags based on occupancy, passenger weight and seat belt latch position. Passenger front and side airbags will automatically be disabled for children and small adults when weight on the seat is less than approximately 80 lbs. (36 kg).

This system will clearly indicate that the passenger airbags are enabled "ON" or disabled "OFF."

Early production models of the 2004 Solara were built with an amber-colored PASSENGER AIRBAG light. To better differentiate the PASSENGER AIRBAG light from warning lights, it has been changed to white in color. This color change does not have any effect on the meaning or operation of the light. This light remains on at all times with the key in the ON position.

In the event of an OCS malfunction, both the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light and passenger airbag "OFF" indicator lights will illuminate.

After finding SRS code B1650 on Camry and Solara vehicles, or a B1150 on Highlander vehicles, the next step is to check codes in the OCCUPANT DETECT menu on the Diagnostic Tester. Take necessary steps to diagnose the root cause of the OCS DTC code BEFORE initializing the system.

IMPORTANT SERVICE NOTE:
If system initialization is not performed after an OCS DTC is set, SRS codes B1650 or B1150 will not clear and the system may not operate properly. Be sure to perform the "Zero Point Calibration" and "Sensitivity Check Procedure" for the conditions listed below.

^ The occupant classification ECU is replaced.

^ Accessories (seatback tray or seat cover, etc.) are installed on the seat.

^ The passenger seat is removed from the vehicle.

^ Both the SRS warning light and passenger airbag ("OFF") indicator light comes on.

^ The vehicle is involved in an accident or collision.

System Operation Overview

CAUTION USING A SEAT BELT EXTENSION:
On vehicles equipped with SRS - Occupant Classification System (OCS), it is critical that the extender tab be buckled into the buckle AFTER the customer sits down in the seat.

Leaving the extender installed in the buckle before sitting down will cause the OCS to remain in the airbag "OFF" or disarmed state.

Initialization Procedure

Zero Point Calibration





With the Diagnostic Tester connected to DLC3, use the OBD/MOBD function in the DIAGNOSTIC application to access the OCCUPANT DETECT menu items. Follow the screen flow to complete Zero Point Calibration.

NOTE:
Before performing Zero Point Calibration and Sensitivity Check verify the following:

^ The seatback pocket is empty.

^ Nothing is placed on the seat.

^ Nothing is placed under the seat.

^ Correct seat position per Diagnostic Tester instructions.

If ZERO CALIBRATION fails, check for DTCs and diagnose per repair manual instructions in the Technical Information System (TIS). Following any repairs, repeat Zero Point Calibration and Sensitivity Check.

Sensitivity Check Procedure





With the Diagnostic Tester connected to DLC3, use the OBD/MOBD function in the DIAGNOSTIC application to access the OCCUPANT DETECT menu items. Follow the screen flow to perform the Sensitivity Check Procedure.

If the Sensitivity results deviate more than 7 lbs. (3.2 kg) from the actual weight on the seat:

1. Remove the test weights from the seat.

2. Loosen and retighten the mounting bolts of the passenger seat taking care not to deform the seat rail.

Torque: 37 N.m (375 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)

3. Repeat the Zero Point Calibration with the seat empty and in the proper position.

4. Re-perform the Sensitivity Check Procedure.

If the Sensitivity results continue to deviate more than 7 lbs. (3.2 kg) from the actual weight on the seat, replace the seat frame adjuster assembly (or seat assembly for Solara).

NOTE:
If your Diagnostic Tester reads in kg instead of lbs. you can change the units of measurement in the SETUP function of the DIAGNOSIS application. Select UNIT CONVERSION menu and then choose WEIGHT.
