Exhaust System - Foul Odor From Exhaust System

Introduction

Some owners of 2006 model year Highlander (with V6 engine) and Sienna vehicles may experience a foul odor from the exhaust system during the first miles of use. The origin of this smell has been isolated to excess stamping oil from the manufacturing process on the Bank 1 (Rear Bank) exhaust manifold heat shields. In order to reduce this odor, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the heat shields using an organic-based solvent.

Applicable Vehicles
^ 2006 model year Highlander (V6) and Sienna vehicles.

Repair Procedure

Clean the exhaust manifold heat shields.

1. Allow the exhaust system to cool to the touch.

2. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield upper and lower halves.

3. Use an organic solvent, such as Naphtha, to clean any excess stamping oil from the heat shields.

NOTE:
Some areas of the heat shields may require soaking for at least 5 minutes and then wiping in order to get the surface effectively cleaned.





4. Reinstall the upper and lower halves of the exhaust manifold heat shield.

Applicable Warranty:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
