DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly.
HINT: Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the rear disc brake caliper assembly.
3. REMOVE REAR DISC
(a) Release the parking brake.
(b) Put matchmarks on the rear disc and the axle hub.
(c) Remove the rear disc.
HINT: If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns smoothly.
4. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT
(a) Using needle-nose pliers, remove the 2 parking brake shoe return tension No.1 springs.
(b) Remove the parking brake shoe strut and parking brake shoe strut compression spring.
5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE NO.1 SHOE ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 cup.
(b) 2WD:
Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 pin.
(c) Disconnect the parking brake shoe return tension
No.2 spring and remove the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly.
6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
(b) Remove the parking brake shoe return tension No.2 spring.
7. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE NO.2 SHOE ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 cup.
(b) 4WD:
Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 pin.
(c) Remove the parking brake No.2 shoe assembly.
(d) Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the parking brake No.3 cable assembly from the parking brake cable shoe lever.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage parking brake No.3 cable assembly.
8. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE NO.3 CABLE ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE GUIDE PLATE
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt and the parking brake shoe guide plate.
10. DISCONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE (for 2WD)
11. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
12. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING NO.2 PIN (for 2WD)
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 pin from the backing plate.
13. SEPARATE REAR SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD)
14. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 4WD)
15. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
16. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING NO.1 PIN (for 4WD)
(a) Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 pin from the backing plate.
17. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer.
(b) Remove the shim and parking brake shoe lever from the parking brake No.2 shoe assembly.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
(a) Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance.
Standard clearance: Less than 0.35 mm (0.014 in.)
If the clearance is greater than the standard, replace the shim with one of the following sizes.
(b) Using pliers, install the parking brake shoe and shim with a new C-washer.
2. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE GUIDE PLATE
(a) Apply adhesive to the threads of the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.
Adhesive: Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent
(b) Install the parking brake shoe guide plate with the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.
Torque: 18 Nm (184 kgf-cm, 13 ft.lbf)
3. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
(a) Apply high temperature grease to the areas of the backing plate which make contact with the parking brake shoe.
4. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING NO.2 PIN (for 2WD)
(a) Install the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 pin to the backing plate.
5. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
6. CONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE (for 2WD)
7. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE HOLD DOWN SPRING NO.1 PIN (for 4WD)
(a) Install the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 pin to the backing plate.
8. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
9. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 4WD)
10. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD)
11. CONNECT PARKING BRAKE NO.3 CABLE ASSEMBLY
12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE NO.2 SHOE ASSEMBLY
(a) Using needle-nose pliers, connect the parking brake No.3 cable assembly to the parking brake shoe lever.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the parking brake No.3 cable assembly.
(b) Install the parking brake No.2 shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 pin, parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 cup.
13. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
(a) Apply high temperature grease to the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
(b) Install the parking brake shoe return tension No.2 spring to the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly and parking brake No.2 shoe assembly.
(c) Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set to the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly and parking brake No.2 shoe assembly.
14. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE NO.1 SHOE ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 pin, parking brake shoe hold down spring No.2 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No.1 cup.
15. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT
(a) Install the parking brake shoe strut and parking brake shoe strut compression spring to the parking brake No.1 and No.2 parking brake shoe assemblies.
(b) Using needle-nose pliers, install the 2 parking brake shoe return tension No.1 springs.
HINT: Be sure to install the front side spring before the rear side.
16. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
(a) Make sure that all the parts are installed properly. If necessary, reinstall properly.
17. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
18. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT
19. INSTALL REAR DISC
(a) Align the matchmarks on the rear disc and rear axle hub.
20. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
21. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft.lbf)
NOTICE: Do not twist the flexible hose.
22. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft.lbf)
23. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
24. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
25. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
