Steering Column: Service and Repair
STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLYComponents:

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION (See Restraint Systems; Service Precautions).
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL LH
5. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB ASSEMBLY LOWER
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSERT SUB ASSEMBLY LOWER LH
7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
9. REMOVE STEERING PAD
10. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
b. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
c. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
11. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY CENTER
12. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER
13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL ASSEMBLY
14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
a. Remove the 3 screws.
b. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the steering column cover lower.
15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
a. Disengage the claw and remove the steering column cover upper.
16. REMOVE HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH
17. REMOVE WIPER SWITCH
18. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE
19. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Loosen the bolt and remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
b. Remove the bolt, and then slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
NOTICE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
c. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.
d. Separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.
20. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering main shaft assembly
b. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the steering column assembly with the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
21. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Using a screwdriver, widen the claws hanging onto the steering column upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 inch).
b. Pull out the transponder key amplifier with the claw open.
NOTICE: Using excessive force may damage the case.
2. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 tapered-head bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 tapered-head bolts and steering column upper with switch bracket assembly from the steering column assembly
3. REMOVE STEERING MAINSHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).
b. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft assembly and steering main shaft bushing.
NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft assembly.
c. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).
4. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Put the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
5. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Separate the un-lock warning switch assembly connector from the ignition or starter switch assembly.
b. Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly by pushing up the center part and releasing the 2 claws.
c. Disengage the secondary locking device of the unlock warning switch assembly connector.
d. Using a screwdriver, disengage the locking lug of terminals 3 and 4, and pull the terminals out from the rear side of the un-lock warning switch assembly connector.
6. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
a. Remove the 2 screws and key interlock solenoid from the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.
7. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT STEERING MAINSHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Measure the steering main shaft length.
Standard length: 515 mm (20.28 inch)
If the length is out of specification, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.
2. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.
HINT: If there is any abnormality, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
2. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
a. Install the key interlock solenoid to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
3. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the un-lock warning switch assembly to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.
b. Connect terminals 3 and 4 of the un-lock warning switch assembly connector.
c. Engage the secondary locking device.
d. Connect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector to the ignition or starter switch assembly.
4. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Make sure the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly to the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly.
c. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is securely installed.
5. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
6. INSTALL STEERING MAINSHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft assembly
b. Install the steering main shaft assembly to the steering column tube.
c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft assembly.
7. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSHING
a. Using SST and a hammer, install a new steering main shaft bushing.

8. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper with switch bracket assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
9. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
b. Push the transponder key amplifier up and install it to the upper bracket.
NOTICE: Do not push the amplifier up with excessive force.
10. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
b. Connect the connectors to the steering column assembly.
c. Install the wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly
3. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
c. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield and tighten the bolt.
4. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE
5. INSTALL WIPER SWITCH
6. INSTALL HEADLIGHT DIMMER SWITCH
7. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
a. Engage the claw to install the steering column cover upper.
8. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
a. Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.
b. Install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 Nm (20 kgf-cm, 18 inch lbs.)
9. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL ASSEMBLY
10. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER
11. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY CENTER
12. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE
13. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
14. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
15. INSTALL STEERING PAD
16. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
17. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
18. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL INSERT SUB ASSEMBLY LOWER LH
19. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB ASSEMBLY LOWER
20. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL LH
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
21. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
22. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
23. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Some systems need initialization when disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
