TSB REVISION NOTICE:
- August 16, 2007: The Production Change Information section has been added.
- May 7, 2007: 2007 model year has been added to Applicable Vehicles. Part numbers and calibration data for 2007 model year have been added to the Parts Information table and the Calibration Identification Chart.
Previous versions of this TSB should be discarded.

INTRODUCTION:

Some 2005 - 2007 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with a 1GR-FE engine may exhibit an intermittent "no start" condition. Improvements have been made to the Engine Control Module/ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM) calibration to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring. Please use the following procedure to update the calibration.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2005 - 2007 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with 1GR-FE engine.

WARRANTY INFORMATION:

PARTS INFORMATION:

NOTE:
1. The ECM (PCM) does NOT need to be replaced as part of the Repair Procedure.
2. Authorized Modification Labels may be ordered in packages of 25 from your facing PDC.

REQUIRED SSTS:

NOTE:
Additional Diagnostic Tester Kits, CAN Interface Modules, Program Cards, or other SSTs may be ordered by calling SPX/OTC at 1-800-933-8335.

CALIBRATION IDENTIFICATION CHART:

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

1. If the vehicle is currently exhibiting a "no start" condition, refer to the E-TAS for the diagnostic procedure.

Refer to the Repair Manual within E-TAS / TIS library:
- Division: Toyota
- Model: Tacoma
- Year: 2006 OR 2007
- Service Category: Engine/Hybrid System
- Section: Engine Control System
- Keyword: > 1GR-FE Engine Control System: SFI System: Basic Inspection

NOTE:
When the intermittent "no start" condition is related to the ECM (PCM) issue, there will be NO injector pulse during cranking on the first starting attempt. After one ignition key cycle the vehicle will start.

2. If the vehicle exhibits the above conditions, flash reprogram the ECM (PCM) following the repair procedure below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Check for the Authorized Modifications Label affixed to the vehicle in the location shown in Figure 1.
Confirm if the ECM (PCM) calibration has been updated. If the calibration listed is NOT the latest ECM (PCM) calibration - go to step 2.

2. Connect the Diagnostic Tester to the vehicle and select CURRENT ECU CAL from the ECU REPROGRAM MAIN MENU. Determine the vehicle's current ECU calibrations (see Figure 2).
- The sample screen prints are the 14.0a software version and may differ from subsequent software versions.

NOTE:
If the Calibration ID matches the "Previous Calibration ID" as shown in the Calibration Identification Chart in this TSB, proceed with flash reprogramming.
If the Calibration ID matches the "New Calibration ID" as shown in the Calibration Identification Chart, this vehicle has already been programmed. Refer to the E-TAS for diagnostic procedures applicable to any stored DTCs.

3. If the ECU calibration ID is NOT the same as the "New Calibration ID" listed previously, proceed to Flash Reprogram ECM (PCM).
4. Flash Reprogram ECM (PCM)

NOTE:
The Midtronics Battery charger MUST be used in Power Supply Mode to maintain battery voltage at 13.5 volts while flash programming the vehicle.

Follow the procedures outlined in TSB2064, "ECU Flash Reprogramming Process," and flash the ECM (PCM) with the NEW calibration file update.

NOTE:
If the "Check Engine" light is ON when the ignition is turned back ON to begin the reprogramming process, a scan tool cable problem exists. Refer to TSB0959, "ECU Flash Reprogramming Error Message."

5. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature before test-driving.
6. Test-drive vehicle to confirm proper vehicle operation.
7. Install the Authorized Modifications Label.
A. Using a permanent marker, enter the following information on the label:
- ECM (PCM) part number: [Refer to the Parts Information section for the CURRENT PART NUMBER]
- Calibration ID(s): [Refer to the Calibration Identification Chart for the NEW CALIBRATION ID]
- Dealer Code
- Repair Date
- Change Authority (this TSB number): TSB2734

B. Affix the Authorized Modifications Label to the vehicle at the location shown in Figure 1. The Authorized Modifications Label is available through the PDC, P/N 00451-00001-25

8. Calibration update is complete.
