Steering Pad

REMOVAL

1. PRECAUTION
Refer to Restraint Systems; Service Precautions.
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Wait for at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the air bag from working.
3. REMOVE NO.2 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER




a. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 2 lower steering wheel cover.

4. REMOVE NO.3 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER

a. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in protective tape, disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 3 lower steering wheel cover.

5. REMOVE STEERING PAD

a. Using a "torx" socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 "torx" screws until the groove along the screw circumference fits in the screw case.




b. Pull the steering pad out of the steering wheel assembly and support the steering pad with one hand, as shown in the illustration.

NOTE: When removing the steering pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

c. Disconnect the horn ground harness from the steering pad.
d. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the airbag connectors.




e. Remove the steering pad.

CAUTION:
- When placing the steering pad assembly, keep the upper surface of the steering pad facing upward.
- Never disassemble the steering pad.


INSTALLATION




1. INSTALL STEERING PAD

NOTE:
- Never use airbag parts from a different vehicle. When replacing parts, replace them with new ones.
- Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
- If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
- When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and is not pinched between other parts.

a. Support the steering pad with one hand, as shown in the illustration.
b. Connect the 2 airbag connectors.
c. Connect the horn ground harness to the steering pad.




d. Confirm that the circumference groove of the "torx" screws fits in the screw case, and install the steering pad.
e. Using a "torx" socket wrench (T30), install the 2 screws.

Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)

2. INSTALL NO.3 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER

a. Engage the 2 claws, install the No. 3 lower steering wheel cover to the steering wheel assembly.

3. INSTALL NO.2 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER

a. Engage the 2 claws, install the No. 2 lower steering wheel cover to the steering wheel assembly.

4. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

Torque: 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 35 in.lbf)

5. INSPECT STEERING PAD ASSEMBLY
6. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
