Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

FRONT AXLE HUB

COMPONENTS:





ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
3. REMOVE FRONT DISC
4. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH (for 4WD)





5. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
(a) Using a dial indicator, measure the looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum looseness: 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the measurement surface. If the looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.





6. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB RUNOUT
(a) Using a dial indicator, measure the runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum runout: 0.03 mm (0.00118 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the measurement surface. If the runout exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.

7. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH (for 4WD)
8. INSTALL FRONT DISC
9. CONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
10. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque:
for Aluminum Wheel 131 Nm (1336 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.)
for Steel Wheel 209 Nm (2131 kgf-cm, 154 ft. lbs.)

REMOVAL

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH





(a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle.





(b) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle.

NOTICE:
^ Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake caliper.
^ Do not twist or bend the flexible hose.

3. REMOVE FRONT DISC LH





4. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH (for 4WD)
(a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove the axle hub grease cap.

NOTICE: Do not damage the axle hub.





5. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT LH (for 4WD)
(a) Remove the cotter pin, adjusting lock cap and front axle hub nut.





6. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)
(a) Remove the 4 bolts.
(b) Remove the axle hub and dust cover from the steering knuckle.
(c) Remove the O-ring from the axle hub.





7. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for 4WD)
(a) Remove the 4 bolts.
(b) Using a plastic-faced hammer, tap out the front drive shaft from the front axle hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.

(c) Remove the axle hub and dust cover from the steering knuckle.
(d) Remove the O-ring from the axle hub.

DISASSEMBLY

NOTICE: Do not allow foreign matter, etc. to contact the ABS rotor bearing.

1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL ADJUSTING NUT (for 2WD)





(a) Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the adjusting nut.
SST 09930-00010





(b) Using SST, remove the front wheel adjusting nut.
SST 09318-12010





2. REMOVE FRONT AXLE WITH ABS ROTOR BEARING ASSEMBLY
(a) Gently fix the front axle hub in a vise.

NOTICE: Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.

(b) Using SST, remove the bearing.
SST 09710-30021 (09710-03051), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09957-04010, 09958-04011)





3. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB OIL SEAL
(a) Using a screwdriver, pry the oil seal.

REASSEMBLY

NOTICE: Do not allow foreign matter, etc. to contact the ABS rotor bearing.





1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB OIL SEAL
(a) Using a brass bar and hammer, tap in a new oil seal.

NOTICE: Do not damage the oil seal.





2. INSTALL FRONT AXLE WITH ABS ROTOR BEARING ASSEMBLY
(a) Using SST and a press, press in a new bearing.
SST 09649-17010

NOTICE: Make sure to securely fit the bearing to the axle hub.





3. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL ADJUSTING NUT (for 2WD)
(a) Using SST, install a new adjusting nut.
SST 09318-12010
Torque: 382 Nm (3895 kgf-cm, 282 ft. lbs.)

INSTALLATION

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for 2WD)
(a) Apply MP grease to a new O-ring.
(b) Install the O-ring to the axle hub.

NOTICE: Do not damage the O-ring.





(c) Install the dust cover and axle hub to the steering knuckle with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 99 Nm (1010 kgf-cm, 73 ft. lbs.)

2. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (for 4WD)
(a) Apply MP grease to a new O-ring.
(b) Install the O-ring to the axle hub.

NOTICE: Do not damage the O-ring.

(c) Connect the front drive shaft to the front axle hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the front drive shaft boot.





(d) Install the dust cover and axle hub to the steering knuckle with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 99 Nm (1010 kgf-cm, 73 ft. lbs.)





3. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT LH (for 4WD)
(a) Install the nut, front wheel adjusting lock cap and a new cotter pin.
Torque: 338 Nm (3446 kgf-cm, 249 ft. lbs.)

4. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB
(a) Inspect the front axle hub.

5. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE CAP LH (for 4WD)
(a) Install the axle hub grease cap.

NOTICE: Make sure to securely fit the bearing to the axle hub.

6. INSTALL FRONT DISC LH
7. CONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH





(a) Connect the front disc brake caliper and install 2 new bolts.
Torque: 99 Nm (1010 kgf-cm, 73 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the flexible hose.
^ Make sure that the bolts are free from damage and foreign matter.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts.





(b) Connect the brake tube bracket to the steering knuckle with the bolt.
Torque: 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)

8. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque:
for Aluminum Wheel 131 Nm (1336 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.)
for steel Wheel 209 Nm (2131 kgf-cm, 154 ft. lbs.)

9. CHECK SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
(a) Check the speed sensor signal.
