REMOVAL
CAUTION: Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column.
1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
NOTICE:
^ After the ignition switch is turned OFF, the navigation system requires approximately 90 seconds to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the ignition switch OFF, wait 90 seconds or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
^ Some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.
3. REMOVE LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER
4. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER
5. REMOVE STEERING PAD (w/ Steering Pad Switch)
6. REMOVE STEERING PAD (w/o Steering Pad Switch)
7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel set nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)
8. REMOVE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Remove the 2 screws.
(b) Detach the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.
9. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Detach the 4 clips.
(b) Detach the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.
10. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the 5 connectors from the turn signal switch with spiral cable.
(b) Using pliers, grip the claws of the clamp and remove the turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.
11. DISCONNECT COLUMN SHIFT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE COLUMN SHIFT SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
14. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD INSERT
15. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt and air duct.
16. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 3 bolts and nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and the steering column.
(c) Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft from the steering column.
(d) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft.
(e) Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
17. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and the power steering gear.
(b) Remove the bolt and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
18. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the bolt and 2 nuts. Then remove the steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.
DISASSEMBLY
NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/ Engine Immobiliser System)
(a) Using a screwdriver, widen the claws attached to the upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.0394 inch).
(b) Pull out the transponder key amplifier with the claws open.
NOTICE: Using excessive force may damage the case.
2. REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LIGHT ASSEMBLY (w/o Engine Immobiliser System)
(a) Using a screwdriver, widen the claws attached to the upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.0394 inch).
(b) Pull out the key cylinder light with the claws open.
NOTICE: Using excessive force may damage the case.
3. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
(a) Secure the steering column in a vise.
(b) Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(c) Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.119 to 0.159 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(d) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 tapered-head bolts, and then remove the upper steering column with switch bracket and the steering lock bracket from the steering column.
4. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
(a) Turn the ignition switch lock cylinder to the ACC position.
(b) Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver and pull out the ignition switch lock cylinder.
5. REMOVE UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the switch.
6. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
(a) Remove the 2 screws and key interlock solenoid from the steering lock.
7. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Detach the 2 claws and remove the ignition switch from the steering lock.
8. REMOVE BREAK AWAY CAPSULE
(a) Remove the 2 break away capsules and 2 break away collars from the steering column.
9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET SPACER
(a) Using a brass bar, hammer and vise, gently strike the central part of the steering column bracket spacer and remove it.
(b) Remove the No. 1 tilt steering support collar from the lower steering column tube.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Measure the length of the steering main shaft.
Standard length: 526 mm (1.73 ft.)
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET SPACER
(a) Fix the steering column in a vise between aluminum plates or a cloth. Then install the steering column bracket spacer to the steering column.
NOTICE:
^ Install the steering column bracket spacer so that it is facing in the direction shown in the illustration.
^ When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
2. INSTALL BREAK AWAY CAPSULE
(a) Install the 2 break away capsules and 2 break away collars to the steering column.
NOTICE: Do not damage the plate spring of the break away collar.
3. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the ignition switch to the steering lock.
4. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
(a) Install the key interlock solenoid to the steering lock with the 2 screws.
5. INSTALL UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the unlock warning switch to the steering lock.
6. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER
(a) Check that the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the ACC position.
(b) Install the ignition switch lock cylinder to the steering lock.
(c) Check that the ignition switch lock cylinder is securely installed.
7. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
8. INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN CLAMP WITH SWITCH
(a) Temporarily install the upper steering column with switch bracket and the steering lock bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
9. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/ Engine Immobiliser System)
(a) Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
(b) Push the transponder key amplifier upward and install it to the upper bracket.
NOTICE: Do not push the amplifier up with excessive force.
10. INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LIGHT ASSEMBLY (w/o Engine Immobiliser System)
(a) Align the key cylinder light with the installation position of the upper bracket with the key cylinder light inclined.
(b) Push the key cylinder light upward and install it to the upper bracket.
NOTICE: Do not push the key cylinder light up with excessive force.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column with the bolt and 2 nuts.
Torque: 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
2. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and power steering gear.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (357 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
3. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (357 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
(c) Align the matchmarks on the steering column and steering intermediate shaft.
(d) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (357 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
(e) Install the 3 bolts and nut.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)
4. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the air duct with the bolt.
5. INSTALL LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
6. INSTALL COLUMN SHIFT SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. CONNECT COLUMN SHIFT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable to the steering column with the clamp.
(b) Connect the 5 connectors to the turn signal switch with spiral cable.
9. INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Attach the claw to install the upper steering column cover.
(b) Attach the 4 clips.
10. INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Attach the 2 claws to install the lower steering column cover.
(b) Install the 2 screws.
Torque: 2.0 Nm (20 kgf-cm, 18 inch lbs.)
11. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering main shaft.
(b) Install the steering wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
12. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
13. INSTALL STEERING PAD (w/ Steering Pad Switch)
14. INSTALL STEERING PAD (w/o Steering Pad Switch)
15. INSTALL LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER
16. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER
17. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
NOTICE: Some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.
