P310 HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL: HYBRID CONTROL SYSTEM: P0A0F-238: Engine Failed to Start

DTC P0A0F-238 - Engine Failed to Start

DESCRIPTION

The hybrid vehicle control ECU detects this DTC and effects fail-safe control if the engine or transaxle gear has seized up, or foreign objects have been caught in either of them.

HINT: If this DTC is output, the engine or gears in the transaxle may be seized. Be sure to check the level of the engine oil, transaxle oil (ATF), and coolant before inspection.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (SFI SYSTEM)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG).
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine Control / Trouble Codes.
(d) Check if DTCs are output.
Result:

B -- GO TO DTC CHART Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions
A -- Continue to next step.
2. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT PULLEY REVOLUTION (P POSITION)
(a) Turn the power switch off.
(b) Move the shift lever to the P position, and lift up the vehicle.
(c) Turn the crankshaft pulley using hand tools to check if the crankshaft can rotate smoothly.
CAUTION: Do not turn the power switch on (READY) while performing this inspection. Be sure to turn the power switch off before performing this inspection, to prevent the engine from starting.

Result:

NG -- CHECK FRONT TIRE REVOLUTION
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU - CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
(a) Disconnect connector B3 from the hybrid vehicle control ECU.
(b) Disconnect the B21 crankshaft position sensor connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):

Standard resistance (Check for short):

NOTE: Turning the power switch on (IG) with the hybrid vehicle control ECU connectors disconnected causes other DTCs to be stored. Clear the DTCs after performing the inspection.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

(a) Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

HINT:
- "Cold" and "Hot" refer to the temperature of the coils themselves.
- "Cold" is from -10°C (14°F) to 50°C (122°F) and "Hot" is from 50°C (122°F) to 100°C (212°F).

NG -- REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (HV)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG).
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes.
(d) Check for hybrid control system DTCs, freeze frame data, and diagnosis information and note them down.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
6. CLEAR DTC (HV)
(a) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Trouble Codes.
(b) Clear DTCs and freeze frame data.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
7. CHECK READY INDICATOR ON
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG).
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / Generator (MG1) Rev, Engine Spd.
(d) While depressing the brake pedal, turn the power switch on (READY).
OK:
The READY indicator comes on.
HINT:
- If the READY indicator does not come on, or the READY indicator comes on and MG1 turns but the engine does not crank, replace the hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly.
- If this DTC (P0A0F-238) is output, the HV battery may be discharged and DTC P3000-388 or P3000-389 may be output. If any of them is output, perform diagnosis for that DTC.

(e) Refer to the graph for data list confirmation of "Generator (MG1) Rev" and "Engine Spd".

NG -- REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
8. CHECK ENGINE RACING
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG).
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / Generator (MG1) Rev, Engine Spd.
(d) While the READY indicator is on, depress the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds with the shift lever in the P position.
OK:
The engine revs up.
HINT: If the engine does not rev up, or MG1 turns but the engine does not crank, replace the hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly.

NG -- REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
9. CHECK CREEP MOVEMENT
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) While depressing the brake pedal, move the shift lever to the D position and release the brake pedal.
OK:
The wheels turn (The vehicle creeps forward).
HINT: If the wheels do not turn and the reading on the Techstream shows DTC P3147-602 (HV transaxle output malfunction), replace the hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly.

NG -- REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.
10. INSPECT ENGINE SPEED
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) While driving at the vehicle speed of more than 6 mph (10 km/h), fully depress the accelerator pedal to raise the engine speed.
OK:
Engine speed increases smoothly.
HINT: If the engine over-revs or the reading on the Techstream shows DTC P3147-241 (HV transaxle input malfunction [input damper]), replace the transmission input damper assembly.

NG -- REPLACE TRANSMISSION INPUT DAMPER ASSEMBLY
OK -- PERFORM SIMULATION TEST. IF SYMPTOM IS NOT REPRODUCED, REPLACE ENGINE, HV
TRANSAXLE AND HYBRID VEHICLE CONTROL ECU

11. CHECK FRONT TIRE REVOLUTION
(a) Lift up the vehicle.
(b) Move the shift lever to the N position with the power switch off.
CAUTION: Do not turn the power switch on (READY) while performing this inspection. Be sure to turn the power switch off before performing this inspection, to prevent the engine from starting.
(c) Turn the crank pulley using hand tools to check if the front tires rotate.
OK:
The front tires rotate.
NG -- CHECK AND REPAIR ENGINE
OK -- REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
