TSB REVISION NOTICE:
- June 29, 2010: The Production Change Effective VIN has been updated in Production Change Information.
Previous versions of this TSB should be discarded.

INTRODUCTION:
Some 2005-2010 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit a tick/click noise from the blower motor. The procedure in this bulletin has been developed to improve this condition.

APPLICABILITY:

PRODUCTION CHANGE INFORMATION:

Vehicle Applicability:

All 2005-2010 model year Tacoma vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below, install the Blower Motor Tick Click sound insulation kit and, if the blower motor was not updated per TSB3278, "Blower Motor Squeal Noise at Low Ambient Temperatures" then install an updated blower motor.

For 2010 model year Tacoma vehicles produced AFTER the Production Change Effective VINs shown, the blower motor has already been updated and this TSB does not apply.

WARRANTY INFORMATION:

PARTS INFORMATION:

NOTE:
Part number 87103-04041 (Blower Motor) should only be ordered if the vehicle was built BEFORE the Production Change VINs shown above and the blower motor was not updated per TSB3278, "Blower Motor Squeal Noise at Low Ambient Temperatures".

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
2. Remove the glove compartment door assembly.

A. Disengage the claw and separate the glove compartment door stopper from the glove compartment door assembly.

B. Slightly deform the upper part of the glove compartment door assembly to release the 2 stoppers and open the glove compartment door assembly until it becomes horizontal.
C. Pull the glove compartment door assembly toward the rear of the vehicle to release the 3 hinges and remove the glove compartment door assembly.
D. Remove the glove compartment door stopper.

3. Disconnect the 2 clips, the blower motor 2-pin connector and the 4-pin blower resistor connector.

4. Remove the 3 bolts and remove the blower motor.

5. Remove the 3 bolts and one nut securing the ECM and IP harness.

6. Remove the plastic connector clip from the HVAC assembly by disconnecting the two clips.

7. Pull the IP Harness/ECM bracket to the right of the vehicle and temporarily secure it with a zip tie. This will allow access to the side of the HVAC assembly when installing the long foam piece.

8. Remove the RH scuff plate.

9. Remove the RH kick panel.

10. Clean the areas of the HVAC assembly that will have the sound insulation installed with mild soap and water. Ensure the surface is completely dry and free of residue before proceeding.

NOTE:
There are two images shown of each foam installation location. The images on the left show the areas that will need to be cleaned. The images on the right show the same images with the foam installed.

11. Install the round foam piece to the bottom of the HVAC Blower housing. Use the profile of the foam to correctly install around the blower housing.
A. Begin installation of the foam in the area marked.
B. Remove an inch of backing to initially install the foam.
C. Slowly peel the backing off while pressing the foam around the profile of the HVAC assembly.

NOTE:
The large side of the foam should face the bulkhead of the vehicle.

12. Install the long piece of foam onto the HVAC Blower housing. Use the profile of the foam to correctly install the foam on the housing.

A. Remove the backing in the area shown between the dotted lines.

NOTE:
The piece of the foam marked with dotted lines should be applied to the center of the HVAC Blower Housing.

B. Install the foam to the center of the HVAC assembly.
C. Slowly remove the LH side foam backing and simultaneously press the foam around the profile of the HVAC assembly.

D. Repeat the procedure in the previous step for the RH side.

13. Modify the wire harness, if needed.

A. Measure the blower motor branch length. If the branch length is less than 150 mm, increase the branch length to 150 mm.

NOTE:
Blower motor branch length is the distance from the edge of the L-Clip to the end of the blower motor connector.

B. Remove the tape at the three locations.
C. Adjust the blower motor branch length to 150 mm.
D. Reapply tape at the three locations using the new L clip.
E. Confirm the blower motor branch length is 150 mm.

14. Install the blower motor (install updated motor if applicable) with the three longer screws and acoustic cover.

NOTE:
- If VIN is BEFORE production change, confirm whether updated blower motor was installed per TSB3278, "Blower Motor Squeal Noise at Low Ambient Temperatures". (Check vehicle repair history)
- Before installing the blower motor, confirm the round foam does not overlap onto the mating surface for the blower/HVAC assembly.

15. Remove the zip tie holding the IP harness and ECM bracket.

16. Install the 2 bolts and one nut to secure the ECM and IP harness.

17. Install the plastic connector clip to the the HVAC assembly.

18. Install the RH kick panel.

19. Install the RH scuff plate.
20. Connect the blower motor connector and blower resistor connector.

21. Secure the harness with the two clips.
22. Install the glove compartment door assembly.

A. Pull the bottom of the stopper out until the clip hole is visible.
B. Insert the tip of a small flat-blade screwdriver into the clip hole to prevent the bottom of the stopper from retracting.

HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

C. Attach the stopper to the instrument panel at the hole.

D. Attach the stopper to the glove compartment door.

E. Remove the screwdriver from the stopper.
F. Install the glove compartment door assembly with 3 hinges, holding it horizontal.

G. Slightly deform the upper part of the glove compartment door assembly, and install the glove compartment door assembly

23. Connect the negative (-) battery terminal.
24. Confirm the blower motor operates correctly and the tick/click noise is no longer present.
