Dynamic Laser Cruise Control System

CRUISE CONTROL: DYNAMIC LASER CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM: P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

DTC P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction

DTC P0503 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The cruise control system uses the same vehicle speed signal that is sent to the ECM for the SFI system. If DTC P0500 is detected, perform the diagnosis using the inspection procedure for DTC P0500 in the SFI system. The speed signal is converted for use by the cruise control inside the ECM.
Both the SFI system and the cruise control system can set DTC P0500, but the detection conditions of the two systems are different.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT: Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER
(a) Drive the vehicle and check whether the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.

HINT:
- The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.
- If the speedometer does not operate, check it by following the procedure described in Speedometer Malfunction Speedometer Malfunction.

NG -- GO TO MALFUNCTION IN SPEEDOMETER
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (VEHICLE SPD)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Vehicle Speed.
(e) Drive the vehicle.
(f) Read the value displayed on the Techstream.
OK:
Vehicle speeds displayed on the Techstream and speedometer display are equal.

NG -- INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (+S VOLTAGE)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
3. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (+S VOLTAGE)

(a) Disconnect the combination meter connector.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:

NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ECM)
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (SPD SIGNAL WAVEFORM)

(a) Move the shift lever to N.
(b) Jack up the vehicle.
(c) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(d) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:

HINT: The output voltage should fluctuate up and down, similarly to the diagram, when the wheel is turned slowly.

NG -- REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.

5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the combination meter connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM
