Applicability

Introduction

Some 2011 4Runner, Prius, and Venza vehicles may exhibit a condition where the Smart Key system is inoperative when another vehicle's Smart key is in or near the vehicle. Condition may affect Smart access, wireless remote operation, and Smart start. Combination meter multi-information display may show the message: "Key not detected" when attempting to start vehicle and when driving. Follow the procedures outlined in this bulletin to address this condition.

Repair Procedure

1. Install updated Door Control Receiver using the appropriate links below. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

^ 2011 4Runner:
Vehicle Interior - Door Lock - 'Door Control Receiver: Removal/Installation"

^ 2011 Prius:
Vehicle Interior-Door Lock - 'Door Control Receiver: Removal / Installation"

^ 2011 Venza:
Vehicle Interior - Door Lock - 'Door Control Receiver: /

2. Program Smart Key system using "3-step procedure" listed below.

NOTE

Identify FCC ID codes on original and new Smart Key fob plastic cases. Key fobs with FCC ID ending in "B" identifies original AM keys. Do NOT mix original AM keys and new FM keys. Keep them in separate locations.





Programming 2 New FM Key Fobs Using "3-Step Procedure":

1. Add - This step programs one new FM key using the original AM key to authorize.








A. Enter Smart Code Program Registration utility for adding keys.

B. Authorize addition of FM key by first placing original AM key (FCC: -AB) on start button for one beep.

C. Add one new FM key by placing it above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep.

D. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 1.

E. Remove all original AM keys from your work area. They are no longer needed.

2. Erase - This step erases all original AM key codes but retains the new FM key programming.





A. Enter Smart Code Erasure utility.

B. Authorize erasing of AM keys by placing new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Close Smart Code Erasure utility to complete step 2.

3. Add - This step programs the second new FM key to complete the set of two new keys.

A. Enter Smart Code Registration utility for adding keys.

B. Authorize addition of key by placing first new programmed FM key on start button for one beep.

C. Add second new FM key by placing above start button for first beep and on seat for second beep.

D. Close Smart Code Registration utility to complete step 3.

Repair Completion

When repair is completed verify all Smart and wireless functions including power back door operation (if applicable). Final programmed keys should include 2 regular Smart Key fobs. None of the final programmed keys should have an FCC ID ending with the letters "AB".
