Applicability

Introduction

Some 2010 - 2011 model year 4Runner vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following conditions These may appear intermittently.

^ Rear wiper inoperative

^ Rear defogger inoperative

^ Rear tailgate power window inoperative

^ Unable to open the rear hatch

^ Interior lights mounted in the tailgate inoperative

^ DTC 1287 Back Door ECU Communication Stop may be stored

These conditions may be caused by an open circuit in the tailgate harness The tailgate harness sheathing has been lengthened to address these conditions.

Repair Procedure





1. Open the rear hatch and remove the door pull handle.

2. Using plastic pry tool detach the 4 claws and remove the back door pull handles.





3. Using a flashlight inspect the harness through the pull handle opening on the left side.

^ If this wiring is damaged it will need to be replaced. Proceed to step 4.

^ If this wiring is NOT damaged STOP This TSB does not apply. For diagnosis of DTC B1287 refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable 4Runner model year Repair Manual.

4. Remove the rear spoiler. Refer to TIS applicable 4Runner model year Repair Manual.

5. Remove the back door trim panel assembly by detaching the 12 plastic retaining clips.

6. Disconnect the courtesy light wiring.

7. Make sure that the hatch is open and disconnect the battery at this time.

8. Remove the left speaker mounting plate by removing the five retaining screws.

9. Remove the wiring harness.





A. Remove the highlighted electrical terminals (1).

B. Remove the rubber insulating plug (2).

10. Remove all remaining wiring retainers.





11. Remove the rubber plug for the wiring under the rear spoiler.

12. Disconnect all fasteners so the harness can be removed from the vehicle.





13. Remove the oval shaped plug on the bottom of the hatch by depressing the locking tabs and pulling downward.

14. Remove the oval shaped plug attached to the body of the vehicle by depressing the locking tabs and pulling upward.

15. Remove the rectangular wiring harness retainer from the hatch.

NOTE
All harness terminals, plugs, and plastic fasteners on the hatch side of the vehicle should be disconnected and loose at this time.

16. Follow the Roof Headlining Removal Procedure for removing the headliner so the harness can be disconnected from the body of the vehicle. Refer to TIS applicable 4Runner model year Repair Manual.

17. Disconnect the harness from the roof of the vehicle so that it can be removed.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the new wiring harness into the vehicle in reverse order from removal. Make sure all terminals are fully connected and the harness is secured to the vehicle.

2. Perform a health check and clear any codes previously set.

3. Check for proper operation of the back door window rear wiper latch defogger and courtesy lights.

4. Reinitialize necessary system that may have cancelled during battery disconnect.
