Applicability

Introduction

Some 2WD 2005 - 2012 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission may exhibit a clunk/thunk noise from the rear of the vehicle or a "bump-from-behind" sensation just before a stop or when accelerating from a stop. Improvements have been implemented on the rear propeller shaft (driveshaft). Utilize the following repair procedure to address this condition.

Repair Procedure

1. Confirm that the condition is the rear propeller shaft (driveshaft) clunk/thunk noise.

A. Test drive the vehicle and confirm the condition.

B. Place the vehicle on the lift and confirm all drivetrain mounts are torqued properly.

C. Are the transmission mount bolts and transmission cross member bolts torqued properly?





Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year Repair Manual:

^ YES - Replace the rear propeller shaft (driveshaft). Go to step 2.

^ NO - Properly torque the transmission mount bolts and transmission cross member bolts and test drive to confirm the noise is gone.

If the noise is still present go to step 2.

2. Install the NEW propeller shaft (driveshaft) assembly.

NOTE

Re-use the spacers provided under the center support bearing to ensure the proper alignment of the center support bearing.

3. Test drive and confirm that NO abnormal vibrations or shudders occur while driving and that the propeller shaft (driveshaft) clunk/thunk noise is eliminated.
