Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Step 3. Fuel Injection System, Cleaning

^ engine MUST be at operating temperature

^ remove intake air boot (except Syncro)
WARNING

Fire hazard. Do NOT smoke or have anything in the area that can ignite fuel when working on fuel system.

Vanagon:

Syncro:

^ disconnect fuel return hose from fitting "A", and fuel supply hose from fitting "B". On Syncro vehicles, the in-line connector pipe should remain in the hose coming from the fuel tank.

Vanagon:

Syncro:

^ connect fuel return hose to supply hose fitting so a recirculating loop is formed which returns fuel from the pump to the tank (arrow)

Vanagon:

Syncro:

Step 3. Continued

^ connect fuel pressure gauge VW 1318 to vacant fitting on pressure regulator with Digifant adapter VW 1318/17 (arrow)

Note: Valve on pressure gauge must be in CLOSED position (as shown)

Vanagon:

Syncro:

^ connect US G16 adapter kit (modified with shut-off valve) to open end of fuel feed hose using Digifant adapter-nipple (arrow)

Note: Valve on adapter kit must be in CLOSED position (as shown)
WARNING

Safety glasses MUST be worn while performing Step 3.

WARNING

Hand tighten only.
Step 3. Continued

^ reinstall intake air boot (not removed on Syncro)

^ connect VW 1367 engine tester with VW 1473 voltage splitter to engine. DO NOT connect exhaust analyzer at this time as it may clog very quickly during cleaning procedure

CAUTION Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest information.

^ thread aerosol container (P/N: G 001 600) onto adapter line and hold can vertically, upsidedown AVOID ALL ELECTRICAL CONTACT

^ open shut-off valve on adapter line completely. A full can should show 4 to 5 bar (58 to 73 PSI) pressure

^ have someone start the engine while you regulate the throttle with your free hand to maintain approximately 3000 RPM

^ keep engine running, and adjust shut-off valve to maintain a continuous pressure of 2.3 to 3.2 bar (34-46 PSI) until container is empty

^ repeat operation with a second container of cleaner

^ reinstall fuel lines by following the removal procedure in reverse order (first bleed off any residual pressure by slightly opening shut-off valve on VW 1318)

^ run engine at idle until radiator cooling fan cycles at least once

^ connect exhaust analyzer and check CO%; correct if not within specifications
