Fuel Tank, Removing And Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

- VAG 1383 A engine/transmission jack
- 3217 Collar nut wrench

Removing

Observe Fuel system safety precautions!

- Switch OFF ignition
- Disconnect battery ground strap


CAUTION!
First obtain radio anti-theft code BEFORE disconnecting the battery ground strap!



- Drain fuel tank, clean fuel filler neck and surrounding area
- Remove retaining ring and splash shield from filler neck then remove mounting bolt
- Remove mounting straps
- support fuel tank using VAG 1383 A engine/transmission jack
- Lower assembly using VAG 1383 A engine/transmission jack just enough to allow the supply and return lines and fuel gauge sending unit harness connector to be disconnected


NOTE: On vehicles equipped with an additional heater, disconnect the fuel lines between the supply and return lines.


- Lower fuel tank

Installing

Observe Fuel system Safety precautions!

Install in reverse order of removal procedure noting the following:
- Route the breather hose kink free
- Secure fuel hoses using spring clamps
- Do not interchange supply and return lines
- return line = blue
