Solenoid Valves, Checking While Driving

Check DTC Memory before checking solenoid valves while driving.

Check wiring to solenoid valves according to wiring diagram.

The solenoid valves can be checked while driving by accessing "read measured value block" function -08-; "display group number 04" and display field -1- using VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).

VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) display zone 1 is 6 figures (0000 00) and is read as follows:

The table shows Solenoid Valves -N88-, -N89-, -N90- and -N91- controlled in each selector lever position. The solenoid valves control the switching valves to the relevant gears.

During gear changes, control of the solenoid valves may vary from the following table for a short period.

Solenoid Valves -N92- and -N94- are supplementary valves that affect gear selection changes and are only controlled during gear changes. They are displayed in positions 5 and 6.

On transmissions up to 12.92, the activation of the solenoid valves will be briefly different to that described in the table when shifting from 3H - 3M and from 4 - 3M.

Group 04:

Reading Measuring Value Block; Display Group Number 004; "Checking Solenoid Valves While Driving"

- The solenoid valves can be checked while driving via "Read measuring value block 08"; "display group number 004"

- The table shows the solenoid valves -N88-, -N89-, -N90- and -N91- as controlled in each selector lever position. These solenoid valves control the switching valves to the relevant gears.

- The solenoid valves -N92- and -N94- are valves which ensure a smooth gear shift and are only activated during gear shifts and displayed in zones 5 and 6. They can show "0" or "1" depending on driving situation.

- V.A.G 1551 display zone 1 has 6 characters (0000 00) and is read as follows:

Vehicles with diesel engine

- To increase passenger comfort in vehicles with
- 2.4 ltr. naturally aspirated diesels from 03.97 and
- 2.5 ltr TDI from 09.98

when the driving range "D" or "R" is selected, the vehicle is stationary and the brake is applied (e.g. at stop light), the transmission control module shifts hydraulically to neutral to minimize vibration in the vehicle.
