Electrical Testing Notes

Special Tools:

CAUTION:
- Avoid damaging the delicate connectors within the control unit harness connector. A simple set of test leads can be fabricated using flat connectors (part # VW N 17 457 2) or equivalent, and a pair of alligator clips.

- Always switch the multimeter to the desired test range before connecting it to the circuit or component. Otherwise the Control Module, component or circuit could be damaged.

TESTING USING VAG 1598 TEST BOX AND 1598/9 CABLE ADAPTOR
- Use the Fluke 83 multimeter (or equivalent) for all of the following electrical measurements.
- Use the VAG 1527B LED tester for the following tests.
- The specified values are valid for ambient temperatures between 0 and +40°C.
- If the measured values vary from the specified values, determine cause using wiring diagram.
- If the measured values vary only slightly from the specified values, clean the tester, test lead terminals and connectors.
- Before replacing components, check the wiring and connectors especially when the specified values are less than 10 Ohms.
- Repeat resistance measurements on components.
- Use VAG 1598/9 adaptor wire and jumper wires from the VW 1594 adaptor kit to connect testers to the VAG 1598 Test Box.
- Vehicle connector terminal numbers match the VAG 1598 Test Box socket numbers.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS
- Battery voltage OK.
- Fuses 15 and 18 OK.
- Engine and transmission ground connections OK: up to 7/92: engine and intake manifold after 7/92: transmission, battery and body near battery.
- Fuel pump and fuel pump relay OK.

VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- If the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) "No signal from automatic transmission" is stored in the Transmission Control Module (J 217) due to electrical testing, it must be erased after testing.
