Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory Checking
VAG 1551 CONNECTIONFold down storage shelf in front of fuse/relay panel. Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 as follows:
- Connect Scan Tool black connector to Data Link Connector (DLC) 2.
^ Display will alternate as shown:

1 - Rapid data transfer
NOTE: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for Scan Tool. Refer to VAG 1551 Voltage Supply, Checking.
- If display appears, connect white Scan Tool connector to the white Data Link Connector 3 in vehicle.
NOTE: Do not connect the blue Scan Tool connector.
Selectable Function Table
- Switch ON ignition.
- Operate VAG 1551 Scan Tool while observing display.
- Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.
- Press PRINT button to switch ON printer (indicator light in print button will light up).
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine Electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Press --> button.
- Press 0 and 2 buttons to select function 02 "Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory".
- Press Q button to enter input.
^ Display will shown number of malfunctions (if any):
No faults recognized! or
X Faults recognized!
- If NO malfunction is recognized, press the --> button.
^ Display will appear as shown:

Select function XX
- If one or more faults are stored, press the 0 and 5 buttons to select function 05 "Erase DTC Memory".
- Press Q button to enter input.
^ Display will appear as shown:
Rapid Data Transfer -->
DTC Memory is erased!
CAUTION: If the ignition was switched OFF between checking and erasing DTC Memory, DTC Memory will not be erased.
- Press --> button.
^ Display will appear as shown:

Select function XX
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select function 06 "End Data Transfer".
- Press Q button to enter input.

- Look up malfunctions in the Diagnostic Trouble Code Table. Repair or replace as necessary. Testing and Inspection
NOTE: The table lists the 5 digit trouble codes in sequence.
- Test drive the vehicle for at least 5 minutes, ensuring that the following conditions are met:
^ Engine coolant temperature must reach 85°C (185°F) minimum.
^ Engine RPM must be raised to at least 3000 RPM.
^ Accelerator pedal must be pushed down briefly at least once.
- Check DTC Memory again.
