Powertrain Management: Tools and Equipment
REQUIREMENTS- Battery Voltage OK.
- Fuses 15, 18 and 21 are OK.
- Engine and transmission ground connections OK.
VAG 1551 CONNECTION
Fold down storage shelf in front of fuse/relay panel. Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 as follows:
- First connect Scan Tool black adaptor cable connector to Data Link Connector (DLC).
^ Display will alternate as shown:
VAG On Board Diagnostic HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer.
NOTE: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for Scan Tool. Refer to VAG 1551 Voltage Supply, Checking.
- If display appears, connect white Scan Tool connector to the white Data Link Connector in vehicle.
NOTE: The blue connector is not used.
Selectable Function Table
- Depending on which Scan Tool function is required; either switch ON ignition or start engine and let idle.
- To obtain additional operating instructions press the HELP button.
- To step through the program sequence, press the --> button.
- Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.
^ Display will appear as shown:

Input address word XX.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics".
^ Display will appear as shown:

01 - Engine electronics.
- Press Q button to enter input.
^ Display will appear as shown:

Tester sends address word 01.
- Control Module identification will be displayed on Scan Tool.
^ Display will appear as shown (e.g.):
023906022E Digifant 1.2 1057 -->
Coding 000 WSC 00000.
- Press HELP button to print a list of possible causes if display appears as follows:
Rapid data transfer HELP
Control Module does not respond!.
- After repairing possible causes, press 0 and 1 buttons again to select address word 01 "Engine Electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Press --> button.
^ Display will appear as shown:
Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX.
NOTE: If function 02 "Read DTC Memory" is selected, turn ON printer using PRINT button (indicator lamp in the PRINT button lights up). With the printer switched ON, stored Trouble Codes and diagnostic information will automatically be displayed and printed out in sequence.
