SCAN TOOL V.A.G 1551 - CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTIONSTest Conditions
- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK.
- Fuses 14 (S14) and 21 (S21) OK.
- Selector lever in position "P" and parking brake applied.
Testing Procedure
1. Check the following Ground (GND) connections for corrosion and poor contact; repair if necessary:
- Transmission GND connections.
- GND attaching point, located at right of relay panel.
- Battery GND strap.
- GND strap between battery and transmission.
2. Unclip cover for the Data Link Connector (DLC) compartment, below heating / ventilation controls, or remove stowage compartment in front of relay plate.

3. With ignition switched OFF, connect Scan Tool (ST) with adaptor cable V.A.G 1551/3 to the 16 pin DLC.
OR
With ignition switched OFF, connect Scan Tool with adaptor cable V.A.G 1551/1 as shown to the DLCs.
- Connect Black plug for VAG 1551 Scan Tool voltage supply to Black DLC.
- Connect White plug to White DLC.
- The Blue plug is not used.

- For additional operating instructions, press HELP button.
- The --> button is used to advance the program of the Scan Tool to the next display.
- An automatic check can be carried out in the "Rapid data transfer" operating mode. All vehicle control modules will then be interrogated automatically.
4. Switch ON ignition.
5. Turn ON printer with the PRINT button (indicator lamp in button lights up).
6. Press button 1 for "Rapid data transfer" mode.

7. Press buttons 0 and 2 (this selects program 02 for "transmission electronics").

8. Confirm entry with Q button.

Coding 00000 WSC 131071
- This is the control module identification, the coding and the dealership number of the V.A.G 1551:
Transmission Control Module (TCM) Identification
Depending upon build level (program level) the Transmission Control Module (TCM) can indicate a different Transmission Control Module (TCM) identification, to that shown in the example.
- 098 927 731 A = Part Number (example).
- AG4 transmission 098 = (Digimat) 4-speed automatic transmission 098.
- 0843 = EPROM (program level).
- Coding 00000 = not required for current version.
- WSC 131071 = dealership number (example) of the V.A.G 1551 ST with which the last coding was performed.
9. If display appears as shown:
^ Indicated on display:
Control module does not respond! HELP
- By pressing the HELP button, a list of possible malfunction causes will be printed out.
- After eliminating the possible causes of malfunctions, again enter the address word 02 for "Transmission electronics".
- Confirm entry with Q button.
10. If "Control module does not answer!" appears again:
- Check wiring connections for Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Check power supply, Battery Positive Voltage (B+), to Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 65535, "control module faulty!"
11. Press --> button

12. After the HELP button is pressed, a list of the possible functions is printed out.

04 - Initiate Basic Setting
05 - Erase DTC Memory

08 - Read Measured Value Block
Further functions, which can be printed out by pressing the HELP key, need not be considered.
After checking and completing a function the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) returns to the following start position:
