Checking Cruise Control

Required for troubleshooting:
- Electrical Circuit Tester VW7466
- Connector Test Kit VW1594
- Valid wiring diagram

Before starting troubleshooting, battery negative terminal (-) must be securely tighted.

Prerequisite:
- Cruise control vacuum system OK !
- S14 Fuse 14 (10A), located on fuse/relay-panel, OK !
- Brake-lights OK !

CAUTION!
DO NOT damage, enlarge or bend connector terminals or cavities by forcing probes into them when performing electrical checks. Always use connector test kit VW 1594 to make the necessary electrical connections.

Preparation:
- Switch ignition OFF
- Remove cover below storage compartment on right side of instrument panel.
- Remove steering column switch cover.
- Disconnect 12-pin connector from Cruise Control Control Module (J213), located on instrument panel crossbar, below the right sided vent

Important note for vehicles with automatic transmission:

The Cruise Control Control Module is only supplied with voltage at speeds above 30 km/h (18 mph). For troubleshooting, auxiliary voltage-supply has to be established. See below.
- Remove Rear Window Wiper/Washer Relay J30 (production control number 72 or 174) from relay-holder, location 2
- Disconnect single connector (voltage-supply for cruise control control module), located behind the relay- panel
- Connect single connector (choose the side which is wired to the cruise control switch) to terminal 2 of relay-holder for Rear Window Wiper/Washer Relay, location 2, using Connector Test Kit VW1594. Refer to wiring diagram to confirm connections.

Troubleshooting procedure:
- Perform test steps according to table below.
- If specified value/test result is obtained, proceed to next step (test result OK)
- If specified value/test result is not obtained, use table for troubleshooting and repair
- Use valid wiring diagram for wire testing
- Disconnect test leads after each step

If malfunction has not been eliminated after performing all test steps, replace Cruise Control Control Module (J213)

After repairing malfunction, please perform functional test of cruise control system.
