Steering Angle Sensor: Service and Repair
Vehicles with ESP are also equipped with Steering Angle Sensor -G85-. It is installed together with the slip ring and return ring in one housing.
Removing
^ Driver-side airbag and steering wheel removed.
^ Check whether the front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
^ If necessary, position front wheels in straight-ahead position.
^ Remove lower and upper trim for steering column switch.
^ Turn steering angle sensor -A- into center position;
A yellow dot must be visible in window -1-.
^ The markings (arrow) must be align.
^ Disconnect harness connector-1 and -2-.
^ Remove housing -A- from steering column.
^ Disconnect connector from housing.
^ Carefully lift catches (3 pieces) and disconnect steering angle sensor.
^ The third catch is located at underside of the steering angle sensor.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
^ Set steering angle sensor into place until the catches engage.
If a new steering angle sensor is being installed, transportation protection must be removed.
^ Perform basic setting after installation.
Basic setting of the steering angle sensor must be checked after the following repair work:
^ If Steering Angle Sensor -G85- was removed or replaced,
^ if the steering column was removed or replaced,
^ if the steering wheel was offset.
Check basic setting of Steering Angle Sensor G85. Refer to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems; Testing and Inspection.
Note: After installing the airbag steering wheel, switch on ignition and then disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
WARNING: Make sure no one is in the vehicle while connecting file battery Ground (GND) strap.
